UTERINE REPOSITOR.
No. 424,178. Patented Mar. 25, 1890.

' UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MURDOCH CHISHOLM, OF HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA.
UTERINE REPOSITOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,178, dated March 25, 1890.
Application filed August 2, 1839- Serial No. 319,509. No model.)
of Halifax, in the Province of Nova Scotia and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Uterine Repositor and Sound, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the. annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of myimproved uterine repositor and sound, and Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective instrument for sounding and replacing the uterus.
My invention consists in a pair of levers connected pivotally, each provided at one end with a bow for receiving the thumb or finger, and connected at the opposite end with a probe or sound, all as hereinafter more fully described.
The levers A A are connected together pivotally by the screw a passing through one lever and screwing into the other lever. Corresponding ends of the levers are provided with bows 19, having eyes a for receiving the finger and thumb. The said bows b are oppositely arranged with respect to each other, and the levers are arranged to be operated by the thumb and finger of one hand, leaving the other hand free.
To the extremity of the lever is A pi voted the sound 0. The body of the sound is circular in section, and its free end is enlarged and rounded. The pivoted end of the sound is prolonged and provided with a stud e, which enters a slot d in the lever A, near its free end. By this construction the operator, by moving the levers A A, is enabled to swing the sound in one direction or the other, as
may be required, the limit ofmotion being about ninety degrees.
My improved repositor is readily placed in any desired position, and may therefore be easily introduced. It requires but one hand to operate it, leaving the other free to act as desired.
The levers give a better index of the amount of force used than the screws of other instruments designed for the same purpose.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A uterine repositor and sound formed of two levers pivotally connected together, one of the said levers being provided with a slot near the free end thereof, and a sound pivoted to the end of one lever and adapted to be swung by the other lever, substantially as specified.
