J. WEIGE L. ROPE CLAMP.

UNITED STATES PATENT OrFIoE.
JOEL WEIGEL, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
ROPE-CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 424,388, dated March 25, 1890.
Application filed November 18, 1889- $eria1No. 330,775- (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOEL \VEIGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rep e-Olamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it most nearly appertains to make, use, and practice the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rope-clamps; and it consists of the parts and details of construction, as will be hereinafter more fully shown in the drawings and described and claimed in the specification.
The object of my invention consists in providing a clamp of the above character capable of receiving rope of varying size, which, while securely holding the rope in an adjusted position, shall in no wise injure the same.
A further object consists in providing a clamp which shall be more simple in construction, less expensive, and more effective in its operation than any device of a similar nature heretofore known-to me.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference are used to denote corresponding parts throughout the entire specification and several views of the drawings- Figure 1 is a view showing the rope secured within the clamp; Fig. 2, a detail view of the binding or clamping wedge; and Fig. 3, a View, partly broken away, for the purpose of illustrating the position of the rope within the clamp.
The letter A indicates a rope or small cable, which is secured within the chamber or open loop B. This loop is formed with a gradual taper from the end I) to the end I), and within the same fits or works the tapering clamping-wedge O. The rear end and sides of the clamping-wedge are provided with the groove or channel E, cut therein for the depth of about one-half the thickness of the I/Vithin this groove or channel, as shown in the drawings, the rope or cable is designed to fit.
To the rear end of the open loop B may be secured the hook F or ring II for the purpose of enabling the same to be secured to a wall or post, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings; or, if so desired, the ring or hook instead of being rigidly attached to the loop may be swiveled thereto. Again, the device may be used without the hook or ring attachment with equally good result.
In the operation of my improved clamp the rope or cable is run through the open loop and within the groove formed in the clamping-wedge. The free end of the rope and small end of the wedge are then inserted into the open'rear end of the loop, and by force exerted on, or the tension of, the rope or cable the clam pin g-wedge is caused to slide within the open loop until the sides of the rope or cable tightly press or bind against the inner sides or face of said loop. It is obvious that the greater becomes the tension upon the rope the tighter will become the binding thereof.
My invention is more particularly adapted for the use of securing lines or small cables and permits of the taking up of the slack line without causing the formation of knots therein.
I am aware that many minor changes may be made in the construction herein shown and described without causing a departure from the nature and scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure pro tection in by Letters Patent of the United States, is
Y 1. In a rope-clamp, the combination, with a loop, of a clamping-wedge having a continirous groove or concavity in its upper and side edges, and a rope fitting within the groove and adapted to be secured between the wedge and the inner face of the rope, substantially as set forth.
2. In a rope-clamp, the combination, with a gradually-tapering loop, of a clampingwedge correspondinglytapered and having a concave or'grooved edge, and a rope fitting within said groove and adapted to be secured between the wedge and the inner face of the loop, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of witnesses.
JOEL IVEIGEL.
In presence of M. A. ACKER, A. B. Bowiins.
