UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WVILLIAM M. WVYKOFF, OF FONDA, IOWA.
CASE FOR THE CANVAS COVERINGS OF BINDERS,.&.O.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,646, dated April 15, 1890.
Application filed October 24, 1889. Serial No. 328,008. (No model.)
T0 60% whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatl, WILLIAM M. WVYKOFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fonda, in the county of Pocahontas and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cases for the Canvas Coverings of Binders, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cases adapted to contain the canvas belts of the elevators used in binders, and also the canvas coverings used to protect binders and other similar machines when not in use; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the case, and Fig. 2 is an end view of the cap. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the case and cap, showing the latter removed from the case.
A is the case, consisting of an elongated tube of sheet metal long enough and large enough in diameter to inclose snugly the rolled-up canvas covering. The tube is provided with an end a,preferably concave upon its outer side and provided with ventilating air-holes a. Ashoulder B is formed near the open end of the tube, the tube being slightly enlarged in diameter at this point, and from the bottom of said shoulder the tube swells outwardly to the circumferential bearing 1), which is of the same diameter as the body of the tube. The extreme end of the tube Z) is beveled inwardly from the bearing b. The cap consists of a ring of sheet metal 0, provided with the end 0. This end is preferably concave upon its outer side and is provided with the ventilating air-holes 0, similar to the tube end. The cap is slid over the open end of the tube, and the beveled end permits the ring of the cap to pass freely over the bearing portion 1), which fits closely inside the cap-ring. The cap is slid over the said bearing portion without difficulty, as the friction does not increase, because there is no increase in the extent of the surfaces in contact with each other. The shoulder B limits the motion of the cap-ring and forms a tight joint around its edge.
The case preserves the canvas when not in use and prevents it from being injured by rats and other vermin, which cannot pass through the ventilating-holes in the end of the case and in the cap. The concave form of the ends strengthens them greatly, and the free ventilation through the case prevents its contents from becoming moldy. The form of the end of the tube permits the cap to be taken off easily, as well as to be put on easily, and although the cap always fits tightly upon the end of the tube it will not become fixe immovably by rust.
What I claim is 1. The combination, with the cylindrical case provided with the shoulder, the annular projecting bearing portion 1) near its end, and the inwardly-beveled end, of the cap having a plain cylindrical flange adapted to be slid over the end of the case and to abut against the said shoulder, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the cylindrical case provided at one end with a fixed perforated coucave end plate and at the other end with the shoulder, the annular projecting bearing portion 19, and the inwardly-beveled end, of the cap having a perforated concave end plate and a plain cylindrical flange adapted to he slid over the end of the case and to abut against said shoulder, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM M. WVYKOFI WVitnesses F. I-IoFFEE, WILLIAM WATsoN.
