GALLASPIE MCDONALD, OF RONOEVERTE, \VEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO JOHN MCDONALD, OF SAME PLACE, AND PETER DOW, OF WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WEST VIRGINIA.
BEDS'TEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,314, dated September 30, 1890 Application filed February 11, 1890. Serial No. 3401 (N model-J To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GALLAsPIE MCDONALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ronceverte, in the county of Greenbrier and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Bedstead, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in bedsteads, and has special reference to the manner of connecting the side bars with the corner-posts of the frame.
The object and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is aside elevation of a portion of a side bar and corner-post connected in accordance with my invention, a portion of the post being broken away to expose the interior construction of the joint. Fig. 2 is a detail in transverse section of the spring-box; Fig. 3, a detail in perspective of the side bar and embracing-yoke, and Fig. 4 a similar view of the bifurcated 2 5 bracket. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the springbox.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The post 1 is provided upon its inner face 0 with a rectangular socket or recess 2 and below the same with an opening 3," which extends through'to the rear of the post. Removably mounted and fitting within the recess 2, with the exception of a small space at 5 the upper end thereof, is a block 4, provided with a circular internal bore 5, communicating with the front face ofthe block through a narrow slot 6. The bore is provided with a metal lining 7, and within the same there is 0 seated a coiled spring 8, the upper end of which terminates slightly below the bore, which at its bottom or lower end is closed.
The side piece 9 is provided at its ends with yokes 10, said'yokes being of U shape and comprising opposite arms 11, secured by screw 12 to the upper and lower edges of the side bars and embracing the ends of the bars by means of a connecting portion 13. In rear of the connecting portion 13 of the yoke the terminals thereof are provided with opposite 5o registering recesses 14, and from the upper end of the connecting portion there projects a head or disk 15, connected to the yoke bya narrow neck 16. The disk conforms in size and shape with the'cylindrical bore or recess in the block 4 and rests upon the coiled spring therein, and the neck connecting the disk agrees with the proportion of the narrow slot 6 of the block 4, so that when mounted in position the disk may be reciprocated within the box by any depression of the side bar, as caused by a person occupying the bed.
17 represents a bolt threaded at its rear end and having a rectangular body 18, adapted to be inserted and fit into the opening 3, after which a nut or burr 19 is mounted upon the threaded end and serves to bind the same in position. The bolt is provided at its front end with a pair of vertical arms 20, adapted to embrace the sides of the side bars and fit within the recesses formed in the yoke. These arms form a guide for the vertical oscillations of the side bars, and also aid in the support for the same and prevent lateral movement or play, so that the weight of the bars and the person occupying the bed rests directly upon the vertically-disposed coiled springs, which,
it will be understood, are located in each of the four joints comprised in the bed-frame.
By loosening the binding nut and lifting the end of the bar so that the disk of the yoke is above the block 4 and out of connection with the bore thereof it is evident that the bar may be withdrawn, together with the yoke and the bracket-bolt. 8 5
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination, with the corner-post provided with a recess and with a transverse opening below the recess, of a block loosely mounted in the recess and having a vertical bore and a communicating slot, a spring mounted in the bore, the side rail, the yoke embracing the same at its end and having a neck terminating in a disk mounted on the 95 spring and the neck mounted in the slot, said yoke in rear of the neck provided with a vertically-opposite pair of recesses, and a bolt mounted in the opening below the recess of the post and bound in position by a nut and having its front end provided with a pair of vertically-disposed guidearn1s embracing the yoke and resting in the recesses of the same, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the corner-post having a recess of oblong shape and a lower transverse opening, a block mounted loosely in the recess and terminating short of the upper end of the same, a bolt having a square body portion fitting in and passing through the opening in the post and having a rear threaded end provided with a nut and its forward end with a pair of parallel vertical guide-arms, the block provided with a central bore closed at its lower end and having a communicating slot in its front wall occurring between the guide-arms of the bolt, and
a coiled spring mounted in the bore, of a side rail, a yoke embracing the upper and lower ends of the rail and having its terminals secured thereto and oppositely recessed and mounted in the guide-arms of the bolt and provided at its upper front end with a neck mounted in the slot of the block and terminating in a disk adapted to be inserted through the space between the upper end of the block and the recess and into the bore of the block, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GALLASPIE MCDONALD.
