Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. PRICE, OF BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS.
FU RNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,452, dated September 30, 1890. Application filed June 5,1889. Serial No.313,249. (No model.)
To all whom it may con/cern,.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. PRICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Air-Heating Stoves and Furnaces, of Which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in air-heating stoves and f urn aces in which there is placeda tapering pipe or conduit with a slot opening in the side and secured inside and to the Wall of the combustion-chamber; and the objects of my improvements are to retard the direct escape of all the fat tarry soot and gases and concentrate, superheat, and burn them in a gradual way in straightdraft stoves or furnaces; to produce a uniform tire, that the heat may be more gentle, and to produce and obtain greater economy in the use of fuel. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical sectional elevation of my improvement attached to air-heating stoves or furnaces. Fig. 2 is a View in perspective of the conduit as it appears after being disconnected.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents the combustion-chamber sup` ported upon the fire-pot C and having the fuel-door S. The tapering pipe or conduit B, with the oblong opening or slot A in the side, is secured inside and to the Wall of the comy bustion-chamber A, and in an inclined posichimney, and the small end projects down ward in an inclined position to the fire-pot C on the opposite side of the chamber, and it is there secured to the Wall of said chamber by bolt b, leaving the slot or opening A to admit and concentrate all the gaseous fuel in a sheet form, said fuel then increasing in VVolume as the size of the chamber of the conduit B permits. While the gas is being concentrated and the ame is beating around the outside Wall of said conduit, it becomes so hot that the gas takes re and is consumed by the -intense heat from the inlet or chamber at the lower end, .the unconsuma'ble gases escaping to the iiue through the large end of the chamber, and the ashes fall back in the fire-pot C through the small end of the chamber.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent Combined with and secured inside andV to the wall of the combustion-chamber of anairheating stove or furnace, a tapering pipe or conduit B, with an oblong opening or slot A in the side, the end of the chamber that connects with the iiue or `the escape-way being- Witnesses:
