BOOK-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,628, dated March 3, 1891.
Application iiled June 5, 1890. Serial No. 354,356. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Y Be it known that I, ISAAC C. WooLREY, of Geneseo, in the county of Rice and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Book-Case, of which the following` is a full, clear, and exact description. v
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved book-case which is simple and durable in construction and adapted to hold each book between two movable partitions, thus protecting and preventing injury to the books, and at the same time holding the books in place. v The invention consists in certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be described hereinafter, and then pointedy out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specitication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the gures.
Figure l is a sectional front elevation of the case on the line a; of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a transverse section ot' the same.
The book-case A is provided with the outer casing or shell B, comprising the back C, the sides D, top E, and bottom F. The casing B is provided with a door b and with a series of horizontally-extending shelves G, forming the usual spaces H for the reception of the books. In the several spaces H are placed vertically-arranged partitions Leach provided on top and bottom with a tongue I', fitting into a correspondingly-shaped longitudinallyextending groove K, formed in the shelves G on the top and bottom, in the under side of the top E, and the upper face of the bottom F, as is plainly shown in Fig. 2. The tongues l serve to hold the partitions in place and in the book-spaces H,and at the same time permit a sliding movement ot' the same. Each of the partitions I is also provided with an eye L, each connected with a spring N, extending longitudinally in a suitable groove O, formed similar to the grooves in the shelves G, the top E, and bottom F. The ends of the springs N are fastened to the inside of the sides D, and serve to hold the partitions in proper place, at the same time permitting a slight longitudinal movement of the same to accommodate books of varying thicknesses. Eyes P.' similar to the eyes L, are arranged in the rear edge of each partition I, and the several eyes of one set of partitions in a space II are connected with a spring Q, held in a groove R formed in the inner face of the back G of the casing B. The ends ofthe several springs Q are secured to the sides D and serve the same purpose as the springs N. The several sets of springs N and Q for each set of partitions hold the latter firmly in place and permit an easy and parallel movement of the same. The springs may also be made in sections, their ends connecting with the eyes of adjoining partitions.
In placing a book into the book-case, the operator presses one partition to one side or two adjoining partitions apart to make sufficient room according to the thickness of the book. Thelatter is then shoved into the space, and the operator letting go the partitions, the latter are forced onto the covers of the book and hold the latter in place. A number of books maybe placed between two adjacent partitions, if desired. Thus it will be seen that each book is securely held in place in the book-case, even if the latter has the respective shelf not filled from one end to the other.
.By holding the books between two partitions grooved shelves, of vertical partitions iitted to slide freely in the grooves of the top and bottom and the shelves and horizontally-arranged springs connected to the partitions and holding them yieldingly apart, substantially as described.
IOO
Said partitions to permit the latter to slide, substantially as shown and described.
ISAAC C. VOOLREY.
