SIDECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,539, dated March 17, 1891. Application filed December 26; 1890. Serial No. 375,832. (No modell) To @ZZ whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, CORNELIUS S. MORRIS, a citizen of the United Sta-tes, residing at Moline7 in the count-y of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention is designed to furnish an amusing and attractive toy for children, by means of which a party maybe able to select any of a number of articles, as more fully hereinafter explained.

In the accompanying` drawings, making part of this specification, Figure l represents a front View of my improved device. 2 represents a vertical sectional view thereof, taken in a plane at a right angle to the wheel of the device; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken in a plane passingthrough the axis of said wheel.

Referring to the drawings, the letter A indicates a casing mounted upon a suitable base B. The lower part of said casing is rectangular in shape and is provided with a drawer O, which is provided with a lockingor fastening device E of any suitable description. Above the lower portion containing the drawer the casing is enlarged or widened, and in said enlarged portion is located a wheel G, which is mounted upon a shaft II, journaled in bearing in the front of the casing and a bracket I at the rear of the casing in the interior thereof. The front of the casing is provided with a circular dial or index plate l, having at equidistant intervals spaces L,

in which are inscribed the character or names of the articles to be selected, such as top, balk tbc. The front journal of the wheelshaft projects beyond its bearing, which is at the center of the dial or index plate, and at its projecting end is provided with an index finger or pointer M, for the purpose hereinafter explained. The wheel consists of an annulus N, preferably of sheet metal, mounted at the outer ends of a series'of Aspokes l, extending radially from the shaft or axle K of the said wheel. At equidistant points on the periphery of the wheel are located inclined buckets or shelves, for the purpose hereinafter explained.

The letter S indicates a segmental guardr or guide7 which extends over the upper quarter of the wheel at one side, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The upper portion of the casing is contracted, the sides being brought toward each other. DirectlyT over the axial line of the wheel-shaft and at the top the casing is provided with a slot for the insertion of a disk of metal or other material of sufficientweight to overbalanee the wheel and cause it to turn, the buckets or shelves being set. at such an angle as to receive said disk and turn the disk in one direction invariably.

The most convenient manner of operating the device will be by means of a coin of any suitable denomination, and the size of the slot at the top of the casing may be made to admita coin of any predetermined size ordenomination.

The operation of my invention will be readily understood froin the above description, and it is as follows: When a disk or coin is dropped through the upper slot. in the upper part of the easing, it falls inte one of the buckets, overbalances the wheel, and causes it to rotate, the buckets passing between the segmental guards or guides until the disk or coin is discharged into the drawer below. The momentum given the wheel by the disk or coin will cause it to revolve after the disk or coin has been discharged into the box for a limited time, and when the wheel finally comes to a rest the index finger or pointer will rest with its pointing extremity opposite the character indicating the article automatically selected.

The articles to be distributed may be suitably arranged and characterized by means of characters corresponding to those on the dialplate.

The characters ou the character-spaces may be changed as may be desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A toy consisting of a casing having a dialplate at its front, provided with characterspaces at equidistant intervals, a receptacle near its base, a wheel above provided with inclined buckets or shelves on its periphery,
