Description

(No Model) W. GHIGHESTER.
BOOK.
Patented-Mar. 15, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WARREN CHIOHESTER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 470,861, dated March 15, 1892. Application filed January 29, 1891. Serial No- 379,480- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN OHIoHEsTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Books, of which the following is a specification.
In some instances books have been made with a slate surface upon the interior of the cover, such slate surface being especially available where an arithmetic is'included between the covers.
My present invention allows for the use of a slate within the book in such a way that it can easily be removed for cleaning and either side of the slate can be employed, and this improvement is especially available with blank or memorandum booksor for pass-books or order-books. v
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the present improvement; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section in a magnified size, showing the manner of constructing the slate-holding device.
The leaves of the book A are to be of any desired character, and my improvement can be applied to one or both covers B, and the covers and book may be rectangular or rounded at the corners. The slate D is preferably of flexible material-such as paper with one or both surfaces covered with silicate slate or similar preparation that produces a surface adapted to the reception of pencilmarks, and such slate is slightly smaller than the cover and corresponds thereto in shape.
I provide inturned flanges 0 around the edges of the cover and at theinner side thereof, which inturned flanges O. are sufficiently raised for the slate D to be introduced within such inturned flanges and between the same and the cover of the book, and these inturned flanges will be provided at the three edges of the cover, and there may or may not be a crossing-band C uniting the inturned flanges at the fourth side, and it is preferable to 10- cate these inturned flanges so that the slate may be inserted from the back or folded portion of the book and slid outwardly, as represented, so that such slate will not drop out of the book but it may be drawn out from between the inturned flanges for reversing the slate or for cleaning the same, and when the cross-piece O is made use of it is generally preferable to provide a loop D of tape or similar material upon the one end of the slate to facilitate the drawing out of such slate from between the inturned flanges. The crossband 0' may in some cases be suflicient to hold the slate in position.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the book, of inturned flanges 0 around the inner surface of the cover, and a slate fitting within such inturned flanges and adapted to be drawn out therefrom, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the book, of the inturned flanges (J, the cross-piece 0, connecting such inturned flanges, and the slate D, adapted to be passed between the inturned flanges and reversible, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the book, of a cross-band permanently secured upon theinner surface of the cover and a slate adapted to be passed between the band and the cover and held in position, substantially as specified.
Signed by me this 26th day of January, 1891.
WARREN OHICHESTER.
