UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH A. VANCE, OF PLYMOUTH, OHIO.
SURGICAL APPLIANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,911, dated August 16, 1892. Application filed January 15, 1892. Serial No. 418,144. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, JOSEPH A.VANOE, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Plymouth, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Guards for Venereal Discharges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements adapted to be attached to the penis for the purpose of preventing the clothing of the user from being soiled in cases of venereal diseases. In some forms of such diseases there are very offensive discharges from the penis, rendering it necessary for the comfort and cleanliness of the party afflicted to provide some means for collecting such oifensive matter, and thus preventing the clothing from being soiled and injured.
The object of my invention is to provide an economical and efficient device for the above purpose; and it consists in the novel construction hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central sectional view of a protecting device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the rubber band employed in connection therewith.
In the said drawings the device is represented as being composed of three partsviz., a semispherical cap 1, a tube 2, and a spherical receptacle 3. These parts are preferably made of hard rubber, the parts 1 and 3 being connected together by means of the tube 2. The receptacle 3 consists of two parts having screw-threads formed upon their edges, so
prevent them from adhering.
that they may be secured together and the outer part readily removed, when desired, by unscrewing the same for the purpose of cleaning or for allowing the wearer to urinate without removing the device from the penis.
The device is attached to the penis by fitting the cap 1 over the head thereof under the foreskin, the latter then being drawn over the cap and held in position by means of the rubber band shown in Fig. 2, which is adapted to surround the foreskin and by its elasticity bind the same against the cap.
From the above it will be seen the device when in use will receive and retain in the receptacle 3 any involuntary discharge, thus preventing injury to clothing. Said receptacle may also he provided or supplied with a suitable disinfectant, thus purifying and rendering innocuous the matter collected therein.
I may also fasten the device by means of one or more adhesive strips secured to the penis, the loose ends being doubled back to This method of fastening is useful when there is much soreness of the penis, the device being attached to the adhesive strips.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The within-described safeguard for receivin g and retaining venerealdischarges, consisting of the semispherical cap,the spherical receptacle made in two parts connected together by means of screw-threads at their edges, and the tube connecting said cap and receptacle, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH A. VANCE.
