TOBACCO-PI PE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,320, dated June 20, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J oHN D. STEWART, ot the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement `in Tobacco-Pipes 5 and I do hereby declare that of the pipe-bowl D is composed of the disk b and the semi-spheroidal shaped portion a, combined with each other, as shown in the drawings. Au aperture is formed in the center of the disk b, and a` corresponding Aaperture in the apex of the outer portion, a, ot" the hinged cover of the pipe-bowl D for the reception of the rod g, whose inner end is connected to the center of the follower c, and whose outer end projects some distance above the outer portion, a, of said hinged cover, and is surmounted by a button or any other ornamental device.
The spiral spring d, which incloses the rod g and rests upon the disk b within the outer portion, a, of the hinged cover, is so connected with the rod g as to retain the follower c in the position shown in Fig. 2, when it is not pressed downward by the application of the thumb or finger to the upper end of said rod. The diameter of the follower c is a little less than that of the interior of the pipe-bowl, so that it can be pressed into the same by the application of pressure to the outer end of the rod g. TheV said follower is pressed inward for the purpose of compacting the tobacco in the bowl during the operation of smoking, and thereby preventing the eXtinguishment of the re therein until all the tobacco is consumed.
I am aware that various devices have been connected with the bowls otl tobacco-pipes lfor the purpose of pressing down the tobacco therein during the operation of smoking, and therefore I wish it to be understood that What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure byl Letters Patent, is-
