SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,300, dated November 15, 1892- Application filed June 1,1892. Serial na'esam. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SOHEID, of Fort Recovery, in the county of Mercer and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Wrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of theinvention is to provide a new and improved wrench which is simple and durable in construction and more especially designed for conveniently and rapidlyscrewing up ordown nuts on eaves-trough supports or hangers and similar objects.
The invention consists of a jaw adapted to engage the nut and formed with a transversely-extending slot for engagement with the cross-bar of the trough.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as
will be hereinafter described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of part of the same on the line 2 20f Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of an eaves-trough and its supportwith the wrench applied, and Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
The improved wrench is provided with a handle A, formed at one end with a claw B for pulling nails and similar objects. On the other end of the handle A is formed a transversely-extending arm 0, provided at the under side and at its rear end with a lug D, on which is secured or formed the forwardlyprojecting jaw E, arranged in a lower plane than the arm 0, so as to form a transverselyextending slot with the same, as will be readily. understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 2. The jaw E stands at an angle to the body of the handle A, and is formed with a series of recesses F, adapted to engage different-sized nuts, so that the wrench is applicable to the various-sized nuts used in fastening the eavestrough to its hanger.
The device is used as follows: The operator takes hold with the right hand of the handle A and passes the jaw E in engagement with the nut G, screwing on the lower end of the hanger H, passing through the crossbar I of the trough J. The operator then gives a quarter-turn to the handle A, so that the nut G is screwed upon the threaded end of the hanger H, and at the same time the arm 0 passes over the top surface of the cross-bar I until further movement in the given direction is prevented by the lug D abutting against one edge of the cross-bar I. The operator then slightly tilts the handle A upward, so as to move the jaw E downward out of engagement with the nut G. The operator then slides the wrench sidewise until it is clear of the cross-bar I, and then re-engages the jaw E on the nut G to repeat the above described operation. When the nut G has been finally screwed by one or more repetitions of the above-described operation, the trough J is securely fastened in place on the hanger II. It will be seen that, by this device the nut G is given a quarter-turn only, thus leaving the not always in proper posi tion after engagement with the jaw E for reengagement of the same in the manner above described. The handle A is formed with the claw B for conveniently drawing nails with which a hanger is fastened to the roof in case theoperator moves a trough from a building.
It will be readily understood that in case a nut under the eaves cross-bar is rusted on the bolt and ca'nnotbe turned by hand my wrench is very serviceable for conveniently turning and removing the nut.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A wrench comprising a handle provided at one end with a laterally-projecting arm having at one end a depending lug and a notched jaw projecting from the lug in a lower plane than the arm and parallel with and spaced from the said arm to form a slot therebetween,substantially as set forth.
2. A wrench comprising a handle, an arm extending transversely-from one end thereof and provided at its outer end with a lug, a jaw projecting from the said lugdepending therefrom and standing at an angle to the said handle and forming a slot with the said arm, the said jaw being formed with differentsized notches for engagement with the differ ent-sized nuts, substantially as shown and described.
3. A wrench comprising a handle, an arm extending transversely from one end thereof and provided at its outer end with 2, lug, a jaw projecting from the said depending 111;; and standing at an angle to the said handle and forming a slot with the said arm, and a claw formed on the other end of the said han- IO dle for pulling nails, substantially as shown and described.
