Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCE.
JONATHAN R. SUPPLEE AND ROBERT K. WRIGHT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOW-WATER DETECTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,759, dated December 26, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, JONATHAN R. SUPPLEE and ROBERT K. WRIGHT, both ofthe city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Low- Water Detector for Steam-Boilers; and we do herebydeclare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature ot' our invention consists in providing a cylindercontainingavalve, said valve being opened or closed by the action ot' the water and steam in the boiler to allow the steam to escape to the whistle to give alarm in ease of low water in the boiler.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
E is the cylinder. C is the valve. B is the cylinder-head. F and G are the two pipes connecting the detector with the boiler. A is a pipe to which the valve-seat is attached or formed on, connecting; with the whistle. D is a View of the top ofthe valve.
The pipe F is attached into the boiler'at lowwater mark. The pipe G is attached to and opens into the boiler lower down under the water than the pipe F. When the water in the boiler is above the pipe F the pressure inside ofthe boiler forces the valve up into its seat; but when the water falls in the boiler below the pipe F the steam passes through the pipe F into the cylinder above the valve, the valve opens, and the steam passes through the pipe A to the whistle and gives the alarm.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combinationand arrangement ot' the valve G, cylinder E, pipes A F G, attached to the outside of a boiler, whereby to indicate the height of water in the boiler, as herein described.
