KNOCKDOWN RACK FOR SUPPORTING SHIPPING-CASES.

To all whom it may concerm Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. BOWLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ma rengo, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Racks for Supporting Shipping-Oaseaof which the following is a specification.

The object-of this invention is to construe arack for supporting shipping cases in which the case will be held 'in a yielding manner and capable of a swinging movement. The rack when not in use is capable of being folded into a small compass.

In the accompanying drawingI have shown an isometrioal representation of my improved rack in the position it occupies when supporting a case.

The base 1, is of suitable dimensions pro-- vided with a lengthwise slot 2, being narrower at the top.

At each end of the base on each side thereof are fitted extensions 3, which may be moved in flush with the edge of the base and drawn out to form a greater width to the base.

To each end of the base is secured an adjustable device for supporting the shipping case, each device consisting of a support 4, lying in contact with the upper face of the base 1, and is adj ustably affixed thereto, by a bolt 5, having a head 6, fitted to the lengthwise slot 2, in the base, and a nut 7, placed on the upper end of the bolt by means of which the head of the bolt can be drawn into the lengthwise slot firmly clamping the support to the base.

To the support is connected an upright 8, by hinges 9, and to the outer face of the upright are secured brackets 10, having their free endsll, perforated through which screws 12, pass into the upper face of the supports when they are in the position shown in the drawing. To the outer face of the upright is secured a socket 13, within which. is located a coil spring 14, a plunger 15, is placed within the coil of the spring and its enlarged upper end rests uponthe upper end of the coil, and

from the upper end of the plunger extends an arm 16, which is passed through the slot with an opening 19, being larger at its bottom. A block 20 is of a size and conformation to fit within the opening 19, in which position it will be flush with the inner face of the support.

A device thus constructed is placed at each end of the base the links facing. The case to be carried is suspended by the links, is free to swing, and the springs relieve the case of sudden jars. The blocks 20, placed under the uprights will relieve the hinges of the weight of the case, and the brackets hold them in their upright position. The uprights may be adjusted to or from each other to suit differentlengths of cases. When the rack is not in use the blocks 20, are placed within the openings 19, the bolts 12, withdrawn releasing the uprights, when they are folded against the upper face of the base, the arms 16, will lie within the lengthwise slot 2, of the base.

The rack is designed to support cases, boxes, or barrels which contain perishable or easily broken merchandise in transportation.

3. In a knock down rack for holding shipping cases consisting of a base, two uprights having a hinged connection therewith, yielding bearings having a connection with the uprights and means for holding the uprights in a rigid manner.
