Be it known that I, FRANK JACOB SEEM I-IUTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pendlebury, in the county of Lancaster, England,have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Miners Picks; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and eX act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereomwhich form a partof this specification.

My invention was patented in England, October 3l, 1892, No. 19,520, and relates to certain new and useful improvements in miners picks which are adapted to be removably held in a suitable slot in the end of the handle, and according to my invention, instead of forming an eye or hole in the pick, as is the case in the construction of picks commonly in use, and passing it over the wooden shaft or handle, I form a recess in the side of the pick and introduce the pick into a socket specially formed to receive it, said socket having two sides which curve over at the top.

The end of the shaft or handle is formed with a tapered opening corresponding to the recessed portions of the pick and of a corresponding slope or taper.

In assembling the parts ofthe pick together, the handle or shaft is pushed up into a socket, and the recessed portion of the pick is then inserted into the socket and simultaneously into the tapered opening in the end of the shaft, and by being delivered a blow, the pick expands the divided end of the shaft and secures it into the socket. A channel wedge is then driven between the curved portion of the socket and the top of the pick and thus the parts are eectually secured together.

To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consistsin the novel construction, combination and adaptation of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

I clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which with the letters of reference marked thereon form a part of this specification, and in which drawings, similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure l, is a perspective View of the pick as attached to its handle. Fig. 2, is a cross sectional view through the recessed portion of pick and handle; Fig. 3 a longitudinal section through the pick, and Fig. 4, a top plan view of the pick showing its recess.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A, represents a pick having the recesses a, a., and suitably attached to an end of a handle B, is a bifurcated socket O, and the arms C', slightly taper on their inner faces and their upper ends are curved or turned downward as at D, D. The recesses in the side of the pick have tapering sides corresponding to those of the sides of the socket.

E is a channeled wedge, which is adapted to engage with the downwardly curved ends D, sliding on the upper surface of the pick when said pick is inserted in the socket. The arms forming the socket being somewhat resilient, the pick is forced into the socket and the channeled Wedge when forced home, will firmly hold the pick in its socket. This form of sockets is applicable also for hammers or any kind of handles, where it is desired to remove the heads for convenienttransportation,

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a miners pick hammer or the like, the use and employment ot' a head portion slotted as described, the bifurcated socket having arms whose inner faces are beveled, and their upper ends curved downward in combination with a handle, and a channeled wedge engaging with the downwardly curved ends D to securely retain the pick in the said socket, all substantially as shown and described.
