Description
S. PETTIBONE.
Feed Cutter.
No. 53,179. Patented March 13, 1866.
Z7108 77 io-n- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
S. PETTIBONE, OF GORUNNA, MICHIGAN.
IMPRQVEMENT lN FEED-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,179, dated March 13, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. PETTIBONE, of O0- runna, in the county of Shiawasse and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Feed-Cutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to feed-cutters; and it consists in a novel mode of fastening the pivot upon which the cutter or knife-blade used swings or turns to the mouth piece, whereby the knife can be properly brought and adjusted to the edge of the said month.
In accompanying plate of drawings my improvements in feed-cutters are illustrated, Figure 1 being a plan or top view of the same; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section taken in the plane of the line a: 00, Fig. 1; and Fig, 3, a View showing a modification of my improvements.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A in the drawings represents the mouthpiece of the feed-cutter, which is to be fixed to any suitable support for it; B, the knife or cutter-blade attached to a plate, 0, having handle D, which plate with the cutter-blade is hung at one end upon a pivot, F, of the mouth-piece so as to turn or swing thereon, the said pivot being so attached to the said mouthpiece as to be adjusted so as to bring the edge of the knifeto its proper position with regard to the edge of the stationary mouth-piece. This pivot F at its back part, a, is set in a slot or mortise, b, of the mouth-piece A and its horizontal projecting arm G, and through apertures c c c of the said back part, a, of the pivot F, are driven wed ge-shaped pieces or keys d d, which, coming to a bearing against the sides of the mouth-piece arm Gr, firmly hold the said pivot in position, and, as is obvious, enable it to be adjusted at pleasure to bring the cutter to the proper position with regard to the mouth piece of the implement.
The operation of the feed-cutter is the same as with similar cutters, and therefore needs no particular explanation herein.
In Fig. 3 a modification of my improvements is illustrated, it simply consisting in forming the back portion of the pivot-arm, and also such portion of the mouth-piece as it is passed through, of a slightly different shape from that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and above described, and thus requiring the wedges or keys used to be driven between the pivotarm and mouth-piece in different positions with regard thereto, as plainly shown in the said Fig. 3, but accomplishing the same result.
' I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. Securing and holding the pivot-arm of a feed-cutter to its mouth-piece by means of wedges or keys, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the above, passing the rear portion of the pivot-arm through a mortise or slot of the stationary mouth-piece, or any part connected thereto, substantially as herein described.
S. PETTIBONE.
