PACKAGE FOR SHEATHING==PAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Extent No. 533,705, dated February 5, 1 895.
Application filed September 25,1394 Serial No. 524,017. (No model.)
T0 @525 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MINOTTE E. CHAIFIELD, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Packages for Sheathing-Paper; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a perspective View of a package of sheathing paper; Fig. 2, a side view of the same, with the wrapper removed and thenarrow roll partially detached; Fig. 3, a sectional view of the package complete.
This invention relates to an improvement in packages for sheathing paper for the market. As generally furnished to the trade, this paper is put up in rolls of varying widths, usually thirty inches wide. In using this paper for linings around door casings and window frames narrow strips are required, to obtain which the user is obliged to cut them from the end of the long roll.
The object of this invention is to unite to the roll of wide paper a roll of narrow paper and so connect the two that they will not be liable to become accidentally separated, and yet when wanted for use may be readily detached, and the invention consists in the arrangement of rolls as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
A represents a roll of paper of desired width, and as generally put upon the market it is thirtyinches wide. In rolling this paper, a central opening 13 is left, one end of which is closed by a plug C of wood or other suitable material, which prevents the roll from being crushed.
D is a roll of narrow paper which is wound upon a rod or roll E, of a length considerably greater than the width of the paper wound thereon, the said roll of paper being arranged on one end of the said rod. The projecting end of this rod is inserted into the openingB of the roll A, which serves to accomplish the same purpose as the plug 0 at the opposite end. It will be understood that these rolls are of the same diameter, and around the two rolls is placed a wrapping h of heavy paper, which not only serves to protect the sheathing paper composing the roll, but also unites the narrow roll to the wider one.
With paper put; up in the manner above described, the user has simply to remove the outer wrapper F, when paper from either of the rolls may be used independently of the other, and if desired, the narrow roll may be entirely separated from the wider one. Thus the consumer is furnished with paper of convenient widths, without cutting or tearing.
It will be understood that, instead of having the rod E extend entirely through the narrow roll and into the wide roll, a shorter rod may be employed; that is, one which shall extend a short distance beyond the wide roll and on to which the narrow roll may be placed; but it is preferable to use the rod, as above described.
I am aware that paper having perforated or weakened lines has been put up in rolls, so that portions of the roll may be readily removed, and I am also aware that two or more rolls of paper have been mounted on a single hearing so that paper from either roll might be removed without interfering with the other roll. I therefore do not wish to be understood as claiming such as my invention; but
What I do claim is- The herein described package of sheathing-paper consisting of two independent rolls united by a rod which projects from one roll into the abutting end-of the other roll than which it is shorter, said rod of a size to pre vent the rolls turning thereon, a plug entered intothe opposite end of said other roll, and a wrapper around said rolls, and whereby the two rolls are firmly connected for transportation, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HINOTTE Cl-IATFIELD.
