L. 0. BOWER,
ROPE CLAMP. No. 544,342. Patented Aug. 13, 1895.
WZJVfiiii m/mm;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
LOUIS 0. BOWER, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
ROPE-CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,342, dated August 13, 1895. Application filed April 29, 1895. Serial 0. 547,453. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I V
Be it known that I, LOUIS O. BOWER, of Toledo, county of Lucas, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rope-Clamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is. a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to a rope-clamp of that character which is designed to be used to hold clothes-lines, awning-ropes, &c., and has for its object to providea device which shall automatically hold the rope in position after tension is put upon the same manually.
The invention consists in a frame the sides of which are slightly at an angle to each other, with a movable wedge-shaped jaw, one side of which abuts against one side of the frame, the opposite side of the wedge being serrated,
whereby a rope passing between the serrated portion of the wedge and the opposite side of the framewill have a tendency when pulled back manually to move the jaw backward, due to its frictional abutment against the rope, and when the tension is put upon the rope and it is released and moves forward, due
to the tension, the said frictional engagement of the jaw will move the same forward and clamp the rope between the jaw and-the opposite side of the frame, there being a flange upon the jaw, which overlaps the rope, which serves at all times to hold the ropein position in the clamp.
The invention further consists in the parts as shown, described, and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved rope-clamp, showing a rope secured therein. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same, the rope being omitted.
1 designates the frame, which comprises the base 2, side flange 3, and a side flange 4, the flanges 3 and 4 being slightly at an angle to each other.
5 designates ears integral with the frame, through which'pass the screws or bolts by which the frame is secured upon a fence-post or building, there also being a perforation 6 in the base to receive the screw or bolt for the same purpose.
7 designates a sliding wedgeshaped jaw, the outer edge abutting against the flange 3 of the frame, the inner edge being serrated, as at 8, the serrated side of the jaw being substantially parallel to the side 4 of the frame, and in order to hold the jaw in the frame the base 2 of the same is slotted, as at 9, through which passes a pin 10, there being preferably a washer 11 screwed upon the lower end of The operation will be readily apparent.-
The rope is first placed beneath the flange 12, the jaw being pulled back to allow the rope to lay between the jaw and the side 4 of the frame, the flange holding the rope in position, when, upon pulling the rope to put tension upon the same the jaw is moved back,due to its frictional engagement with the rope, thereby widening the distance between the jaw and the side 4 of the frame, when, upon release of the rope, after tension is placed upon the same, the clamp automatically moves forward, due to the said frictional engagement,
and acts as a wedge between the rope and the side 3 of the frame, thereby clamping the ropeand preventing further forward movement of the same.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a rope-clamp which is of few parts and in which the action of the same'is automatic, either to clamp or release the rope, and in which the rope is held in position, thereby making it impossible for the same to pull out of the clamp either in tightening or releasing the same.
What I claim is- In a rope clamp, a body having sidesat my own I hereby affix my signature in presan angle to each other, a wedge shaped jaw enee of two witnesses. movably secured between the same, one edge of said jaw being serrated, a flange extend- LOUIS O. BO\VER. 5 in g from the jaw to the opposite side and serv- Witnesses:
ing to hold the rope in the clamp. CARROLL J. WEBSTER,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as MAUD SCHUMACHER.
