BADGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,770, dated June 22, 1897". Application filed March 9, 1897. Serial No. 626,566. No model.)
in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Badges; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to improvements in badges; and it consists in the novel construotion and means hereinafter described by which the several parts of the badge are securely fastened together. 4
The badge comprises the back plate carrying the usual attaching pin or pins, the celluloid, paper, silk, or other material bearing the word or design and arranged against said back plate, and the metallic ornamental front inclosin g rim which corresponds with the back plate in outline and forms a border around the material bearin g the word or design. This front inclosing rim is of novel construction in that it has formed integral therewith and at definite points certain lugs which extend inward over the surface of the celluloid or other material and are apertured in line with apertures formed in the celluloid and back plate. Through these apertures are passed suitable headed fasteners which effectually secure the parts of the badge together, as hereinafter described.
By the present invention a very superior means of securing the parts of the badge together is provided and the badge is rendered more durable and useful.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front view, partly broken away, of a badge constructed in accordance with and embodying the invention; andFig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section of same on the dotted line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A designates the metal back plate of the badge, B the celluloid or other material bearing the word or design and applied to the obverse face of said back plate, and O the front inclosin g rim, which conforms to the outline of the back plate and constitutes a border for the material 13. The back plate A may be supplied with any suitable attaching pin or pins 1), and the face material B will bear any desirable word, design, em blem, or other character.
The front inclosing rim 0 has the inwardlyextending lugs a, which contact with the material B, and said lu gs and the material B and back plate A are formed with the apertures Z) to receive the fasteners or split pins (1, whose heads cover the apertures in the lugs a and Whose tines are spread on the reverse face of the back plate A. The lugs a and fasteners cl effectually secure the parts A B 0 together in a most satisfactory manner and cause the rim C to closely bind the edges of the material B against the back A. The fact that the lugs a extend inward over the material B not only enables the rim 0 to be secured by the fasteners d, but prevents any spreading of the rim and any turning upward of the inner edges of the rim from the material B. The rim 0 is by this invention secured at its inner edges, and the means securing the rim binds all the parts of the badge together.-
The middle portions of the back plate A are projected outward, as illustrated in Fig. 2, in order that the facing material B may be thrown frontward and given a convex outer surface, this improvin the appearance of the badge. At the points behind the lugs a the back plate A is depressed, as indicated at m, these depressions formingseats against which the lugs CL may be pressed with that portion of the facing material B directly behind said lugs. The lugs a and the conforming seats m in the back plate A enable the facing material B to be securely held by the lugs a and tend to prevent any creasing or wrinkling of the facing material B, the result being that although'the facing material throughout its middle portion is thrown forward the entire surface of said material presented to view will be smooth and even in appearance.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. The badge comprising the back plate, the facing material B thereon and conforming to the outlines thereof, the front inclosing sheet-metal rim also conforming to the outline of the said back plate and having the inwardly-exten din g lu gs, and the fasteners passing through said lugs, facing material and back plate, the edges of said facing material being firmly clamped against said back plate by said inclosing rim and the lugs extending inward therefrom; substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The badge comprising the back plate, the facing material B thereon and conforming to the outlines thereof, the front inclosing sheet-metal rim also conforming to the outline of the said back plate and having the in- Wardly-eXtending lugs, and the split pin-fasteners passing through said lugs, facing material and back plate, the edges of said facing material being firmly clamped against said back plate by said inclosing rim and the lugs extending in ward therefrom; substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The badge comprising the back plate having its middle portion thrown forward to form a eonvexouter surface, the front inclosing rim having the imvardly-extending lugs and conforming to the outline of said back plate, the facing material on the said back plate and conforming to the outlines thereof and having its edges concealed and bound against the edges of the said back plate by said rim, and the fasteners passing through said lugs, material and back plate, the back plate behind said lugs being depressed to form seats for the said lugs and that portion of the facing material behind the same; substantially as set forth.
4. The badge comprising the back plate, the front inclosing rim having the inwardlyextending lugs and conforming to the outline of said back plate, the facing material on and conforming to the outline of the said back plate and havingits edges clamped by the said rim and inwardly-extending lugs against the edges of said back plate, and the fasteners passing through said lugs, material and back plate, the back plate behind said lugs being depressed to form seats for said lugs and said facing material behind said lugs; substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT DATZ.
