Description

{No Model.)
'W. R. PARK 8: B. T. WILLISTONI VALVE.
- No. 587,855. Patented Aug. 10, 1897.
JOE/w UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. WILLIAM R. PARK, OF TAUNTON, AND BELVIN T. WILLISTON, OF SOMER- VILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR S TO THE HANCOCK INSPIRATOR COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,855, dated. August 10, 1897. Application filed July 28, 1896. Serial'llm' 600,810. (No model.)
Todll whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that we, WILLIAM R. PARK, residing at Taunton, in the county of Bristol,
and BELVIN T. WILLISTON, residing at S0merville, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts,- have invented an Improvement in Valves, of which the following-description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on on the drawingsrepresenting like parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in valves, and has for its object to provide a valve which is detachably secured to its stem in a manner as will be described, so that the valve is free to adapt itself to irregularities in its seat and yet is so attached to its stem that it may be ground while on the stem.
f In accordance with this invention the valve is attached to its stem by movement of one part laterally with relation to the other part, and athe said parts when in alinement with eachother are locked against lateral movement by an intermediate device, as will be described. These and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 represents in elevation a valve and its stem embodying this invention. Fig.
2 is a longitudinal sectionof the valve and its stem shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a perspective of the valve, intermediate device, and stem separated; and Fig. 4, a modification to be referred to. 7
Referring to the drawings, A represents a valve, and, A a stem to which the valve is detachably secured by an intermediate device, preferably of the construction herein shown.
The intermediate device referred to may and preferably will be made in the form of an internally-threaded nut a, which is adapted to engage a threaded stud or projection a, on the back face of the valve A. The nut a isproyided with substantially diametrically opposite arms orlugs I) Z), havingin ardly-projectin g flanges b-'-b ,forminglocking-finger which are adapted to fit over projections 12' b on the reduced portion or end I) of the valve-stem. The projections 12 b may and preferably will be'integral with the valve-stem A, and may jections b b on the stem, so that the stem may be disconnected from the valve, and vice versa, when the stem is permitted to be moved laterally.
The nut 11, provided with the arms b I), hav-' ing the inwardly-proj ectin g flanges or fingers, forms one form of intermediate device by which the valve is attached to the valve-stem, and the said valve and stem may be locked against lateral movement, one with relation 'st-antially equal to the thickness of the pro to the other, by providing the flanges b b on their under side with substantially circular recesses b b for the reception of the projections b b on the valve-stem, in which recesses the' said projections are retained by the said nut on the stud a, so as to force the projections b bf'into said recesses and into the position shown in Fig.2. When the stud a occupies the position shown in Fig. 2, its upper surface is above the lower-edge of the side walls of the recesses 12 bi'andconsequently the valve-stem cannot be moved laterally to disconnect it from the valve, and vice versa, until the nut is turned, (the valve being held stationary,) so as to carry the nut onthe stud a away-from the valve a sufficient distance to permit the projections b 12 to pass under the side walls of the recesses 12 b. When the parts occupy the position shown in Figs.
1 and 2, the valve is securely attached to its valve-stem, but the attach mentis sufliciently loose to permit the valve to wabble and thereby adjust itself to irregularities on its seat.
As shown in Figs. 1, 2, and .3, the flanges I) b on the stem are located diametrically 0pposite, and the reduced portion b of the stem is of a length greater than the width of the slot or passage-way between the locking-fingers 11 b but we do not desire to limit our inventionin this respect, as the reduced portionl) of the valve may be made of a diammeans of the stud a on the valve byturning too - scribed.
eter or width less than the width of the slot between the fingersb If, and the flanges Z) b may be united and made in the form of a dislcf on the end of the valve-stem, as shown in Fig. i.
lVe ela-im 1. The combination with ai'aTve provided with a stud, a valve-stem provided with a Web having lateral projections, and a nut having separated arms provided with fingers forming a passage into which the said web is introduced laterally, and passage-ways for the reception of the lateral projections on the stem, and means to confine said projections in their passage-ways,substantially as de- The combination of a valve having a threaded stud, a nut to engage said, stud,
arms on said nut located substantially opposite and provided with flanges extended to- 20 ward each other to form a passage, and provided on their undersides with recesseshaving end walls, a valve-stem provided with a web adapted to pass between the said flanges,
and lateral projections on said web adaped 25
