UNITED STAT PATENT QFFICE.
JOHN MURRAY GUILBERT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PAPER BOX.
SIEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,423, dated August 1'7, 1897. Application filed November 14, 1895- Serial No. 568,913. (No model.)
To all whom it mcty concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN M RRAY GUIL- BERT,a citizen of the United States, residing inthe city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to paper boxes; and
it consists of a novel construction of partition for the same, the said partition being provided with tabs and being bent up in the novel manner hereinafter described, whereby the differentportions of the same can be easily caused to assume the desired positions and readily placed in position in the box, so as to divide the same into the required number of compartments, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a plan View of a blank from which partitions for a paper box embodying my invention are constructed. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section on line 00 00, Fig.
I a box with partitions therein embodying my invention. Fig. 4 represents a perspective View of a portion of the box, showing a taperin g partition therein to be hereinafter referred to. Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of an end of the box, showing the outer portion thereof turned over the tabs of the partition.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a blank from which the novel partitions employed are constructed, said blank consisting of the body portion B, which in the present instance is of quadrilateral shape and has attached to the ends thereof the tabs or extensions 0 0 and D D. r
E, F, G, and H designate scores in the. blank A, the same extending in the present instance parallel to each other and to the longer sides of said blank, it being noted that said scores F F and G G are each two in number, for a purpose to be hereinafter explained.
- K designates 1ongitudinally-extending portions of the blank outside of the scores E and H, said portions K'forming feet which are adapted to rest in the bottom of a box and to be gummed, pasted, or otherwise attached thereto, while the tabs 0 and are to be gummed, pasted, or otherwise secured to the ends of the box.
0' O and D D designate scores which are in alinement with the ends of the blank A, as will be understood.
The operation is as follows: The blank A,
having been scored as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, is bent up into the shape seen in Fig. 3, the
formed andadapted to be placed in the box, as indicated in Fig;- 3, it being evident that whenthereisa plurality of partitioiis the edges of the tabs D abut against each other, and thus cause the body of each of the completed partitions to extend parallel with each other, thereby constituting a simple and effective means for dividing up boxes which are adapted for various purposessuch as holding neckties, articles of apparel, &c.-it being understood that the scores are on the under side of the partitions when bent up, as seen in Fig. 3.
When it is desired to employ a wedgeshaped or tapering partition, as seen in Fig. 4, the scores instead of running parallel, as seen in Fig. 1, are caused to converge toward each other, whereby when the parts are properly bent up, as indicated, the tapering partition L will be formed, the diiferences between the same and. the partition M, havin g parallel sides, being readily apparent.
Especial attention is also called to the feature of providing the scores F and G in pairs at the points indicated, so that when the board is bent the said scores will be on the inner side of the partition, and the outside of said partition. at the folds M will present an unbroken surface, whereby a neat finish is given to the partition, and re-covering ofthe same is avoided after it is formed up. f
In the present instance the scores F and G are employed as stated, but, if desired, the same may be made bycompressing ortotherwise bending the board.
It will be seen that by bending the blank A as described a hollow partition is 'formed having a top M and the tabs D, which are adapted to be freely movable, and when in position form a lining for the inner end walls of the box.
If desired, at the points where the tabs contact with the box the outer cover LT thereof may be turned over and secured to said tabs D, as seen in Fig. 5 and dotted lines, Fig. 3, whereby the same will be held in position. At the points opposite the top of the hollow partitions the outer coverNis turned in between said top and the wall of the box.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hollow partition for boxes, formed of a blank having the double scoring F, G, and the single outer scoring E, H, on its under face and provided with tabs between the scorings E, F, and G, H, respectively.
2. A hollow partition formed of a single piece of material having folds, the outersurfaces of which are unbroken, a top portion, and tabs attached to said partition, capable of being bent, in combination with a paper box, against suitable portions of which, said tabs are adapted to contact, the outer cover of said box being lapped over, and secured to said tabs, adjacent the points, where the same contact with the walls of said box, and at the points opposite the top of the said partition, the said outer cover is turned in between said top and the wall of said box.
3. The combination of a box with a hollow partition formed of a single piece of material having folds, the outer surfaces of which are unbroken, said partition being provided with upright sides and a top portion, laterally-deflected feet K attached to said partition and adapted to rest on the bottom of said box, and tabs D extending at an angle to the upright sides and adapted to abut against the ends of said box.
4. A hollow partition formed of a single piece of material having folds, the outer-surfaces of which are unbroken, a top portion, upright sides and tabs attached to said partition capable of being bent, in combination with a box against suitable portions of which said tabs are adapted to contact, the outer portion of said box being lapped over and secured to said tabs near the points where the same contact with the walls of said box, the extremities of said tabs abutting.
