To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, SIMON- J HARRY, of Washington city, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Axles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in vehicleaxles and. particularlyin that class of such devices which seeks to furnish means for preventing the cap-nut from turning; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed. v
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of my improvement as in use. Fig. 2 is aperspective view showing the collar and pawl in position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the nut. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional View on about line 4 4., Fig. 2; and Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views.
The axle A, spindle B, and box 0 may be of ordinary construction, except in the particulars hereinafter specified. At its outer end the spindle has the threaded stein D and next the inner end thereof the collar-seat E, squared at e to render it non-circular, a stopshoulder e being formed at the inner end of the collar-seat, as shown. Y
The collar F has an opening f fitted on the seat E,-the collar resting up against the shoulder e. At its outer face the collar is provided with a springpawl G, the point of which projects and engages with a shoulder h, forming the end wall of a recess I-I formed in the inner end of the cap-nut I. This capnut has a base-flange which overlaps the spring-pawl G and has the recess H formed in its inner faceand an aperture formed through it for the insertion of an instrument by which to release thepawl, as presently more fully described. This spring-pawl G fits in a suitable cavity or socket F in the face of the collar F and is of the particular form shown in Fig. 6, being provided at one end with an opening 1 for the screw 2, which serves to hold the pawl at one end to the collar. Manifestly a rivet or other suitable fastening may be used insteadof the screw. 'It is not intended to hold this end of the pawl rigidly to the collar' but so its opposite or point end may spring out to engage the nut. Between its ends the pawl is thickened at 3 and tapers thence to its point 4. Beneath this point I arrange a spring which is preferably a plate 5, fixed at one end to the pawl near the point thereof and extending thence back toward the opposite end of the pawl and terminating beneath the. thickened portion from accidentally turning off either by the jarring in use or by the backing of the vehicle. hen desired, the pawl may be released by a slender rod or other suitable instrument passed through an opening J in the nut close to the shoulder h, and by which the point of the pawl may be pressed back and the nut released.
In practice the improvements may be made rights and lefts for use on bot-h ends of the axle.
The I springpawl being countersunk as shown permits the nut to be turned flush up against the collar, the pawl. and the shoulder it engages being so arranged relatively that the pawl will engage the said shoulder when the nut is turned home.
When the collar is in place, it is preferred to arrange' the pawl atthe front of the axle and pointing down.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The improvement in axles herein described comprising the spindle having a threaded stem or shank and a non-circular seat at the inner end thereof, the collar fitted on said seat and provided in its outer side with a recess having a shallow portion to receive the pawl-stem and a deeper portion'to receive the body'of such pawl,'the pawl seated in such recess and having its shank provided 9 with an opening for the fastening-screw and its body thickened and tapered toward its point or free end, the plate-spring attached to the tapered end of the pawl and bearing against the base-wall of the recess in the collar and the nut having a flange and provided in the inner side of said flange with a notch forming a seat for the pawl and with an opening through such flange for the insertion of an instrument by which to release the pawl substantially as shown and described.
