UNITED STATES WALTER LOOKERBY,
PATENT GFFICE.
OF ITHAOA, NEW YORK.
COUNTER-IRRITATION INSTRUMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,714, dated March 1, 1898.
Application filed February 15, 1897. Serial No. 623,436. (No model.)
To 0. whom it may concern:
Be it known that LWALTER H. LOCKERBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ithaca, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Counter-Irritant Instruments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as-will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use .the same.
This invention relates to a novel construction in a device for producing counter-irritation or blistering of the skin.
The object of the invention is to produce a device of this kind which will occupya small space and can be easily carried around, while at the same time it will always be ready for operation. I
The invention consists'of features of con struction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a central vertical section. Figs. 2 and 3 are crosssections on the lines 22 and 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to said drawings, 1 indicates a cylinder provided with contracted ends having apertures 2 and 3, said apertures 2 and 3.
being centrally located and tapered slightly to receive the stoppers 4 and 5, hereinafter The cap 7 is provided with a contracted rear end portion, which connects with the rubber air-bulb 10 for forcing air into the cap, and between the cap and its contracted end are the cross-pieces 11', carrying the stopper 5. The cylinder 1 has a porous filling to absorb certain chemicals or solutions the vapor of ,which causes an irritation to the skin-for instance, the oil of mustard.
In using this device the end of the flaring mouth 8 is placed close to the skin, but not touching the same, and then by using the air- The end portions of the cylin forcing device air is forced through the por- 'ous absorbent, so that it issues at the other end of the cylinder laden with the vapor of the solution within the cylinder, and thus will' produce the blister or irritant efiect on the skin. When the device is not in use, the caps 6 and 7 can be screwed inwardly, so that the stoppers can be fastened securely and prevent the escape of the solution therein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the kind specified consisting of a chamber open at both ends, longitudinally-movable caps secured to the ends of said chamber and provided interiorly with stoppers situated opposite the open ends of said chamber, whereby when the caps are moved inwardly, the ends of the chamber are closed and when they are moved outwardly, the ends .of the chamber are open, one of said caps having an open outer end, and an air-forcing device communicating with the other of said are passages.-
2. A device of the kind specified consisting of acylinder having op'enends, a movable cap 6 having a screw-threaded connection with one end of said cylinder and provided with an interior stopper 4 adapted to close the end of the cylinder, a flaring mouth upon said cap 6, a cap 7 having a screw-threaded connection with the other end of the cylinder and hav ing an interior stopper 5 adapted to close the end of the cylinder, and an air-forcing device communicating with the outer end of said cap 7, while between the stoppers and the caps are passages.
3. A device of the kind specified consisting of a chamber having contracted ends provided with apertures 2 and 3, longitudinallymovable caps secured to the ends of said chamber and provided interiorly with stoppers that are adapted to close said apertures when the caps are moved inwardly and to open said apertures when the caps are moved outwardly, the outer end of one ofsaid caps being open, and an air-forcing device communicating with the outer end of the other of said caps, while between the stoppers and the of a cylinder 1 having its end portion exteriorly screw-threaded, the ends of said cylinder being contracted and provided with apertures 2 and 3, a cap 6 having its inner end screw-threaded interiorly to fit upon the end of said cylinder, the outer end of said cap 6 being provided with a flaring mouth 8, and cross-pieces 9 Within the said cap carrying the stopper 4 that is adapted to fit the aperture 2 upon this end of the cylinder, a cap 7 interiorly screw-threaded to fit upon the other end of the cylinder and provided at its outer end with an opening communicating with an air-forcing device, and cross-pieces 11 Within said cap 7 carrying a stopper 5 that is adapted to fit Within the aperture 3 at this end of the cylinder.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
WALTER I-I. LOOKERBY.
