WATER-FILTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,804, dated J' uly 5, 1898.

To all whom .it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLAF EASTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State `of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Water-Filters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the kind of water-filter which is adapted to be connected with the supply of water to be run through it for flltration'to render it fit to drink, but through which water may be taken for purposes other than drinking without iirst filtering it.
The accompanying drawing shows my improved iilter by a view in vertical sectional elevation.
A is the filter-chamber of the cylindrical shape illustrated or of any other desired shape and which may be formed of sheet metal or of other suitable material. From the top or cover B of the chamber (shown as screwed into the latter) there issuspended the filtering medium C, preferably a porous iilteringstone containing a central passage or well r, leading to an opening p in the cover, from which there extends a suitable faucet D. The base of the chamber A is shown as a hollow neck o, terminating in a tube E,which extends at a right angle to the chamber and contains an upright partition n, iianking which are openings m and Z, through which the tube communicates with the lter-chamber and which communicate with each other through the latter to enable water entering the tube at one v side of the partition n to enter the tube at the 'l opposite side of the partition. A pipe l leads from the opening l up into the filter-chamberA to open against the Aiilt'ering-stone C therein near its lower end, the pipe being slightly curved toward its upper end about the stone, as indicated, to tend to give to the Water which is passed through it under pressure a swirling motion about the stone. The tube E, which thus 'carries the lter-chamber, forms the body of a faucet, the nozzle rof which screws into the forward end of the tube and contains an 4inwardly-opening valve h, seating against the inner end of the nozzle and connected with a stemhf, engaging with the crank g' in a spindle g, which carries at its outer end the operating-handle g2. My invention is not, however, limited to this particular form of valve device. The rear end of the tube E has coupled with it a nipple f, containing a valve e, shown as an ordinary taper- -ing plug-valve provided with an operatinghandle e', and the nipple is adapted to screw into the end of a water-supply pipe, such as the pipe through which water from a watersupply system is led into a room, as a kitchen. Thus my improved iilter may be supported on the water-pipe referred to and is intended so to be.
With the Valve e open (which is its normal condition) and the valve h closed on opening the valve of the faucet Dthe pressure of water which enters the filtering-chamber through the tube E and pipe Z' will cause it to pass through the iiltering medium C into the well o", whence it will iiow out filtered through the faucet D, which may be termed the drinking-faucet. By closing the faucet D and opening the valve 7i the water flowing into the chamber A will swirl about the stone C, thereby cleansing it, and from the ltering-chamber this water runs out by way of the opening 'm through the nozzle i, whence water is to be taken for other purposes than drinking, as for cooking and washing. The valve e is provided to afford by closing it means for shutting olf the water-supply when it is desired to open the filter, as for taking out or renewing the filtering medium.
