i IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN e Be it known that I, HENRY Home, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoppers for Bot-ties, Decanters, Demijohus, and other vessels containing liquids; and I do'hereby declare that the following is a full and eiraetdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in a combination of an air-tight hinge-ball valve stopper for bottles, et decanters, demijohns, 8m., a sieve (with handle) for straining the liquid, that no sediment can possibly pa'ss through the stepper into the glass or other receptacle For the liquid, and the screw which unites the parts, making at once an air-tight, self-opening and closing, and compact strainer for all kinds of liquids. These stoppers can be manufactured of any kind of metal or other material suited to the purpose. s, To enable others skilled in the art to makeand use my invention, lI will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

Figure I is an elongitudinal sectional View of my stopper, showing its several parts. Figure 2 is a cross-section, taken on line a b, showing the sieve. Figure 3 is a sectional view of the sieve, showing the handle to same. Similar letters of reference in the several igures indicate like parts. In the drawings, A represents the body of my improved stopper, at the upper end of which isattached a i self-operating spherical stopper, G. This 'stopper G is attached to the stopper A by means of a hinge, K, and band, E. About half-way up the inside of A is inserted a metallic,hair, or other suitable material, sieve, which prevents any sediment from passing through the stopper. By means of the handle this sieve may be taken out and cleaned and the stopper washed when necessary. The lower part, B, which ts into A by means of a screw, as shown in D, is lined outside with cork, C.

Wha-t I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv The'sievc, straining the liquid as it'passes through, supplied with or without a handle, so that it is easily taken out and thewhole stopper cleaned without trouble, the air-tight spherical-hinge stop, which opens and closes with its own weight, according to the manner in which the vessel is held, the mode of connecting the upper andplower parts by means of a screw, and a combination of these several inventions in a compact, secure.
