TO ALLWHOh'I IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER Pnnsons, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland, and State of Maine, have invented a new and improved Lamp-Chimney Fastening and Improved Lamp Top and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and use my invention, rci'erencc being made to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which'- I Figure 1 shows a sit e elevation of a la1np-chin1ney and holder, with one part of my improvement thereon.
Figure 52, another side view of the same, with the chimney partially raised.
Figure 3, a top plan of a lamp-top, with one purt'of my improvement thereon.
Figure '4, a. side view of a lamp-top, with the other portion of my improvcuient annexed, and the lamp-top swung oil.
Same letters indicate like parts in all of the drawings.
My invention consists, first, of a circular spring encompassing the bottom of the lamp-cl1imuey,just above the lip thereof, or slightly flaring portion at the bottom. This spring passes also through the loop F, forming thus. a hinge or pivot upon which the chimney swings. The two ends a a of this spring are brought somewhat near to ether and then held and allowed to s rim toward or from each other bv the helix C. The s win E is C 7 p I: v T a held b" the helix suflicicntl close around the bottom of the chimne to secure the chimne within the circle of J t y y the spring. The two parts of the spring'E which are shown atff are made to pass under hooks or shoulders,
or any similardevice, made on the edge of the lamp-top, (seeiD D.) These parts of the'loopor spring are pressed outwardly or apart, into these hooks, 8%., by the helix 0. Pressing the two ends of the circular wire, loop, or spring E toward each other, they can be removed from the hooks or shoulders D D, and the chimney of the lamp, thus surrounded at its bottom by this loop, can be turned off from the flame, in a vertical plane, as illustrated in fig. 2, and there held by'the loop for the purpose of lighting, cleauing,&c. When the chimney is again restored to a perpendicular position, the two partsff of the circular wire E being pressed under the shoulders,
Eton, D D, will hold the chimney in that position. The hoop or circular spring E loosely encircles the bottom of the chimney, so as to allow of its compression when the ends are to be taken out of the shoulders D D or to be placed therein. "bus the loop serves as well for a hinge, on which the chimney turns when it is moved oil from the lame or wick, as for a means of holding and securing the chimney, both when turned oil and when placed over the flame or wick. In nearly all lamps of the kind shown in the drawings, or what are called kerosene lamps, the cone or part shown at 13 screws into the part H or part that is secured to the body of the lamp. This part B is thus taken off for filling and cleansing, and the chimney connected therewith is removed with it. When removed, it has formerly had to be laid aside while the lamp is being filled or cleansed, which subjects the chimney to the liability of being broken. Moreover, if the chimney and part B be heated, it is quite inconvenient to handle. To obviate both of these objections, I surround and encircle the part B with the loop or ring L somewhat loosely, and form a hinge or pivot at N by this ring and a loop or staple. The ring allows the part B to turn within it, and thus be unscrewed' from the part H or the body of the lamp, and then holds the part B when turned oif, and the chimney also with it, as seen in fig. 4. The ring L has anothcr useful purpose: if the part B should be inadvertently left unscrewed, o should become unscrewed accidentally, then the part B, with its chimney, is prevented from falling or being thrown oft, and the chimney from breaking. On the bottom of the part B is generally found a small rim or shoulder, K, which will hold the ring L. If not, small projections or a rim can be supplied easily. Thus, by this ring, a hinge and holder for the part H and its chimney is provided, and the danger of accident to the chimney lessened.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The helix C, in combination with the ring E, loop F, and shoulders D, as and for the purposes specified.
2. The ring L, when employed as and for the purposes set forth.
ALEX R. PARSONS.
