REVERSIBLE PLOW POINT AND SHARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,740, dated May 9, 1899. Application filed March 6, 1899- Serial No. 707,980. (No model.)
To a. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. BEALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albion, in the county of Calhoun andState of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Plow Points and Shares; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to plow-points, and more particularly to reversible or selfsharpening shares; and it consists in certain improved constructions and combinations of parts whereby certain desirable results are produced.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the best form in which I have contemplated embodying my said invention, and my said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.
Figure 1 is a bottom or under side view of Fig. 2 is a detached view in perspective of the reversible point. Fig. 3 includes two views in perspective, one of the recessed end of the share and the other of the reversible part of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the retainer, and Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of the part of the share to which the point is secured.
In the figures, A is the main body of the share, B the detachable and reversible point, and O the reversible cutting edge.
The point B is of a well-known construction and is secured to the main body A in a wellknown way, by means of which it is securely held when in use, but which permits the said point to be detached and reversed Whenever it is found desirable to do so. The share A, near the point, is provided on its under side with the recess D. (See Fig. 5.) This recess is made in the form of a socket adapted to receive the entire end of the cutting edge. The wall I; of this recess nearest the point does not extend from front to rear in a straight line, but has its inner part given a bend, forming with the outer edge or wall of the share the rentrant angle and angular recess b. This wall I) and the outer edge of the share are each provided with a shallow groove of a shape ap proximating to that of a letter V. The web (1, which I term the covering-web, forms the upperwallof the recess and extends a considerable distance toward the furrow end of the share, so as to considerably overlap the line on which the end of the cutting edge and the share join in order that there may be no openings and inequalities at this point on reversing the cutting edge. The wall 5 of this recess covers a small portion of the front edge of the cutting edge, so that on a reversal of the cutting edge there will not be any notch or opening in the whole length of the cutting edge of the share, even should the furrow end of the said cutting edge be considerably worn. The furrow end of the share A is on its under side provided with the T-shaped recess a. (See Figs. 1 and 3.) In this recess is placed the bolt 2, the head of which engages the short trans verse portion of the recess, and it is thus enabled to draw the retainer E tightly against the end of the share and of the reversible cutting edge 0.
The cutting edge 0 has each end constructed to fit the wall I) of the recess D of the share and has its ends and back of a doubly-beveled form to fit the grooves in the wall I) and edge 19 of the share.
The retainerEhas its inner side constructed to engage and closely fit the ends of the cutting edge. The said retainer has at its inner end a lip e, which engages the rear edge of the share, and itis also provided with an opening through which passes the bolt e. The in nor face of the retainer E is also provided with a shallow groove similar to that of the walls I) and b of the share, and in this groove is an angular depression a of double the size of the angular recess 7), as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.-
The share A is provided with an angular construction at a 0. to fit the groove of the retainer. (See Figs. 1 and 3.) The outer end of this angular construction or ridge is made to preferably correspond to the ends 0 c of the cutting edge 0, which fit the angular recess b, so that when one of the ends 0 c is brought in close contact with a the two will fit snugly together and fill the recess 6 in the retainer.
In assembling the-parts of my improved de- I ters Patent, is-
vice one end of the cutting edge 0 is placed in the socket or recess D. The retainer is then placed in engagement with the opposite end of the said cutting device and with the angular projections a a of the share in the groove of the retainer and the nut upon the bolt 6 tightened. The ends 0 c of the back or thicker side of the cutting edge are angular, as best shown in Fig. 1, and engage the recesses b and c \Vhen the retainer is drawn tightly against the parts A and O, the latter will be rigidly secured and held from all movement. When the cutting edge has become worn, a loosening of the nut on the bolt will permit the cutting edge to be taken out and its position reversed, thereby enabling it to be used a much longer time than otherwise in a Well-known manner.
In the use of such shares the point 0 of the cutting edge is exposed to great wear and liable to become more or less rounded, as shown by a dotted line in Fig. 1. In such case on reversing the cutting edge the worn end would not quite fill the socket or recess in the share. With rnyimproved construction this result never injuriously affects the working of the share, as the web (1 covers all the deficiencies of the joint and presents a smooth and even surface to the earth passing over it. Without this web or some equivalent construction an opening or some inequalities would in many instances be found to result; from a reversal of the cutting edge, and in such opening or inequalities the earth would 1 collect and become impacted, thereby injnring the working of the share.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let- I 1. In a share for plows, the combination with the main body of the same, of the cutting edge, engaging a retaining construction near the point, the retainer engaging its op-1 posite end and securing means for the said retainer, substantially as described. 5
2. In a share for plows, the combination with the main body having a retaining means for one end of a detachable cutting edge, a retainer for the opposite end of the said cutting edge provided With the same retaining means, the reversible cutting edge and means for securing the said retainer, substantially as described.
3. In a share for plows, the combination with the main body provided with a groove and angular recess near the point to receive one end of the reversible cutting edge, of a retainer having a groove and similar recess, the cutting edge having both ends adapted to engage the said grooves and recesses, the retainer and its securing-bolt, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the share having an angular recess, a retainer having a similar recess, a cutting edge having at each end an angular part to engage said recesses, and tightening and securing means for said retainer, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the share and the removable and reversible cutting edge, the said share being provided with the coveringweb, substantially as described.
6. The combination of the share and removable and reversible cutting edge, said share having a socket covering a part of the edge of the reversible cutting edge, substantially as described.
7. The combination with the share and a removable and reversible cutting edge, said share having the covering-Web covering the junction of one end of the cutting edge with V the share, and a wall covering a portion of the edge of the cutting edge, substantially as described.
