Description

No. 6263 04. Patented lune l3, I899.
N. A=. CHASE;
DOOR CHECK.
{Application filed Nov. 26. 1898.)
(No magi.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NEWTON A. CHASE, or LUvERNE, MINNESOTA.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,804, dated June 13, 1899.
' Application filed November 26, 189B. erial No. 697,495. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LNEWTON A. CHASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Luverne, in the county of Rock and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed, relates to door-checks; and it consists of certain novel details of combination and construction of parts necessary to provide a check of the character specified.
The object of my invention is to provide a locking device which will be especially useful for holding a doorin an open position without the annoyance of having the same blown shut or otherwise casually closed and also the provision of means for enabling the securing device to be disengaged from its locking position without the necessity of the operator stooping to efiect such result.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective View of my invention applied to use upon a door. Fig. 2is a top plan view of the device separated from the door and made upon aslightly-enlarged scale from that shown in Fig. 1.- Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of the securing device complete.
Numerals will be employed to designate the several parts.
1 is thelbody-section, between the ears 2 of which I pivot the locking member 3, which is provided with the cam-faced portion 4 and the hooked member 5, which is designed to engage the door, shutter, or the like with which it is intended to cooperate, the body member lbeing secured directly to the baseboard by means of suitable screws passing through apertures 6.
My locking device may be readily thrown out of a locked position by means of the controlling shaft or rod 7, which extends downward andis provided with the anchoring-stem 8, designed to take into or through the rib member 9, formed upon the base. Said shaft is further provided with the looped member 10, which is provided with the terminal or extension 11, properly connected,as by the chain 12, to the extreme end and inner side of the member 4, and it will be apparent that as the shaft 7 is rotated by means of the operatinghandle 13 the arm or extension 11 will be caused to move in the arc of a circle, as the chain 12, of a proper length, will positively draw the hooked member 5 into engagement with the door.
It will be understood that the handle 13 will be so constructed that it will not stand out sufficiently to interfere with the opening of the door.
The curved extension or arm 11 has another function to perform, which consists in bearing against the inner face of the cam-faced portion 4, as it is by such action that said portion is forced outward, thereby withdrawing the hook 5 from engagement with the door, it being understood that the hook member is suitably pivoted between the ears 2, as by the rivet or axle 14.
The operation or use of my improved securing device may be stated to be as follows: The base or body member 1 is secured to the base-board at a suitable location, so that the I hook member 5 will engage the edge of the door as the latter is swung in an open position. As the door is opened to the full extent the edge thereof will strike the curved face 15 of thehook member 5, which will cause the same to travel out of the path of the door, so that the door may freely pass within the opening 16, when a further movement of the door will strike the curved face 17 of the camfaced portion 4 at a point inside of the pivot 14, which will cause the extreme end of said cam-faced portion 4 to move inward toward the body member and incidentally swing the hook member 5 into engagem ent with the door. The door cannot be opened after it is in this position unless the hooked member is caused to move out of the path of the door, which can be accomplished manually by swinging the handle 13 of the shaft 7 around in such a Way as to bring the curved end of the arm 11 into engagement with the inner face of the camfaced portion 4, which, as will be obvious, will cause the hook to swing out of engage ment with the door and permit the same being closed.
It will be seen that I have provided a securing device of a reliable character, though it may be cheaply made and readily mounted in its operative position, and believing that the advantages and use thereof have been made fully apparent from the foregoing specification, consideredin connection with the accompanying drawings, I will dispense with further reference to the details thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A securing device for doors, shutters or the like, consisting of a base member, a hook member having curved terminals, as specified, so located that the door will engage therewith when swung against the hook causing the hook to travel out of the path of the door and then travel back into engagement therewith, in combination with an operating-shaft having a crank portion adapted to engage said hook and move the same in or out of a locked position, and a chain adapted to connect said crank and hook as specified and for the purpose set forth.
2. A securing device for doors, shutters, or the like, consisting of a base member carrying a pivoted hook, a shaft mounted in the base member and having a curved arm or extension adapted to swing into engagement with an extension of said hook and suitable means for connecting said arm or extension with the hook member, substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
