AMANDA o. nnroson, on VICTORIA, 1Li.1Nois:
VESSEL-COVER;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,094, dated January 9, 1900..
Application filed May 26, 1899. erial No. 718,468. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMANDA O.ER1csoN,a citizen of the United States, residing at Victoria, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vessel-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lids for vessels, and is especially designed for use upon pots, kettles, and similar utensils for domestic purposes.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a lid or cover for vessels devoid of a pouring-spout, through which the contents of the vessel may be poured and strained, the lid being adapted to be readily applied to any vessel of a proper size.
Another object is to have the lid of such construction that the hand holding the same during the pouring operation will be shielded and protected as against scalding by the steam rising from the liquid being poured.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a vessel-cover embodying my invention, showing the same applied to a kettle. Fig. 2 represents a centrally vertical section of the same, showing the cap for the pouring-nozzle closed. Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2, but showing the cap raised. Fig. 4 is a plan view with the parts'in the position shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detailed section of a portion of the lid or cover, more clearly showing the detailed construction thereof. Fig. 6 is a partial plan view showing the parts in the position illustrated in Fig. 3; and Fig. 7 is a side elevation of a portion of the cover, showing the pouring-spout at the front.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A indicates a kettle of ordinary shape and construction, and B a lid or cover adapted to fit thereon provided with the handle O and having any desired shape in crosssection, such as the usual conical shape shown in the drawings. This lid may be provided 'to fit within the pot or kettle, so as to hold the lid in place; but so far as it relates to the broad idea of my invention no such flange need be employed; but instead thereof the lower face of the edge of the cover or lid will be formed complete, so as to rest upon the upper edge of the pot or kettle, but without any engagement therewith.
At one side of the center of the lid a spout E is provided surrounding a group of perfo rations F in the lid, said spout being provided with a hinged cap G, adapted to cover and close the spout except during the pouring operation, at which time said cap is preferably thrown back upon its hinge, so as to rest against the handle 0 of the lid, as illustrated in Fig. 3. In this position a yielding hook H upon the cap engages the handle 0 at one edge thereof, so as to lock the cap in raised position and hold the same in such position during the pouring of the liquid from the vessel. This catch may be readily released bya pressure from the thumb or finger of the user whenever it is desired to let the cap down, so as to close the spout.
It is well known thatin the use of many culinary vessels it is frequently desirable to pour out a part of the contents of avessel, such as pouring water off of boiling potatoes, and it is practically always desirable to retain the steam within the vessel, and where the usual covers are provided for such vessels when it is undertaken to drain off a part of the boiling water therefrom the hands of the person using the vessel are Very apt to be burned, if not scalded, by the steam, which is also sure to rise in the face of the person and cause unpleasant sensations, if not more serious re sults.
With the lid or cover embodying my invention a kettle or pot which is devoid of spout or other facilities for pouring the contents therefrom will be provided with such facility by the spout in the lid or cover. The contents of the kettle will be strained in pouring through the lid, and the hands of the user will be protected from the rising steam by the cap of the spout, which is arranged in proper position to perform this function.
It is immaterial, of course, What shape or size is given to the lid or cover, that shown in the drawings being simply typical and illustrative of the ordinary shape and style of cover used in connection with kitchen utensils, showing my invention embodied therein in satisfactory form. Obviously the construction and arrangement of the parts may ,be greatly. varied at will without departing from the spirit of my invention. It is also manifest that the equipment of the usual lids or covers for domestic utensils with my in- Vention adds but little to the cost of construction thereof and to the weight thereof, while it improves rather than detracts from the appearance of the lid as an article of manufacture.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
A lid or cover for vessels adapted to fit within the vessel, and formed at one side with a group of perforations and a spout sur rounding the perforations, said perforations and spout being Within the periphery of the lid; in combination with a central handle for the lid, a hinged flap or cover for the spout, and a catch on the flap or cover for engaging the handle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
AMANDA O. ERIOSON.
W'itnesses:
L. M. RICHARDS, JOSIAH TILDEN.
