Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB CHELIMER, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
CARD-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 646,726, dated April 3, 1 900.
Application filed September 21, 1899. Serial No. 731,197. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, 310013 OHELIMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at 1975 Second avenue, New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card-Holders and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v
This invention relates to devices for hold ing cards, and particularly to such devices constructed to be introduced into and carried within the pocket of the user; and some of the objects of the invention are to provide a device of this general character to removably retain business or visitin g cards, and, f urthermore, to retain such cards in anydesired numher or quantity, while permittingthe same to be readily removed from the holder.
Another object of the invention is to pro-;
vide such a device constructed to retain the cards in such a position that the free end of each card will extend beyond that ofthe card beneath and whereby each card may be separately removed without disturbing or disarranging the remaining cards.
Another object of the invention is to provide for the removable retention of the cards within the holder without injury to the former and to provide a holder for cards which will be neat in appearance and compact in form and one constructed in such a manner as to be readily introduced into the pocket of the user.
With theseand other objects in view the invention consists, essentially, in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which- Figure l is a perspective view, partially broken away, of one form of my improved card-holder. Fig. 2 is a perspective view'of a inodified form of construction; and Fig. Sis a longitudinal central section of the construction shown in Fig. 2, illustrating the inclined tongue thereof.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding views.
Referring to the drawings, and particularly to Fig. 1 thereof, the reference character 1 designates the bottom of a card-holder of any size or dimensions, upon which are formed or withwhich are connected side portions 2, preferably cut away at their free parts throughout the several edges, as shown at- 3, to afford greater access to the cards or contents of the holder, and the side portions 2 are also preferably provided with inwardly-directed extensions 4, located at any desired position thereon, constructed to prevent the accidental disengagement of the contents of the holder.
Formed on or connected with the bottom 1 of the holder is a back portion 5, preferably inclined, as shown, and desirably carrying an extension 6, with which the top or-cover 7 of the holder is movably connected. The back or end portion 5 and the extension 6 are pref-' erably joined to or connected with the adjacent portions of the sides 2 in any suitable manner, substantially as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The front end of the holder is preferably formed on or ,connected with the bottom thereof at the same inclination of the back or end portion 5, and the free edge of said front portion is preferably deflected inwardly to form a bead or ridge 9 to engage the top most card and prevent the accidental disen gagement thereof. If desired, the front por= tion or end 8 may be cut away, as shown at 10, to admit the introduction of the finger of the user while removing the cards from the holder, although the invention is not limited to the cut-away portions 3 and 10 and to the retaining-bead 9 or extensions 4.
The operation and function or object of this invention willbe readilyunderstood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following explanation thereof.
The cards or other contents are introduced into the holder and are forced thereinto under the retaining extensions 4 until the edges thereof contact with the inclined end portion 5 and project the end of each that of the card beneath, as will be readily understood, while the retaining-bead 9 easily card beyond engages the topmost cardand prevents the accidental disengagement of the contents of the holder if the latter should be tilted or inclined in a forward direction, as will be understood.
In Figs. 2 and 3 is illustrated a slightlymoditied form of the construction shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, wherein is illustrated a holder preferablyembodying a bottom portion 11, upon which are formed or with which are connected front and rear end portions 12 and 13, respectively; but said portions are preferably vertical or extend at right angles to the bottom portion instead of being inclined thereto, as in the previous construction. The rear portion or end 13 is preferably provided with an extension 14, desirably directed at right angles thereto and parallel with the bottom portion 11, and preferably has formed thereon or con nected therewith a projection or tongue 15, which is bent upon said extension, and the free edge is desirably introduced into a depression or slot in the bottom of the holder, substantially as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, although the tongue 16 may be constructed of a separate portion and may be attached in any manner either to the bottom 11 or to the extension 1i, so as to extend obliquely across, partially or wholly, the end of the holder. The object or function of this tongue isto incline or project the free end of each card beyond that. of the card beneath irrespective of the construction of the ends of the holder, as will be understood. The side portions 17 may be either formed on or connected with the bottom 11, as desired, and may be cut away, as shown at 18, to afford access to the cards, and the bottom portion 11 and the front end portion 12 may both be cut away, as shown at 19, to afford means for the introduction of the finger of the user d uring the process of moving the card from the holder. The top or cover 20 may be movably connected with the extension 14 of the back end portion 13 in any preferred manner, so as to move in relation thereto.
I do not desire to confine myself to the specific construction, combination, and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, and I reserve the right to make all such. changes in and modifications of the same as fairly come within the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pocket card-holder provided with a bottom or main member having vertical sides cut away at their free edges, and inclined end portions, one whereof is cut away to afford access to the cards and the free edge whereof is provided with a retaining bead or ridge, and the cover or top member hinged to the other inclined end portion so as to fold upon and cover the cards retained in said bottom portion.
2. A card-holder provided with side, front and rear end portions, the front end portion having an inwardly-extending lip or flange, and an inwardly-(lirected ledge or extension upon the rear portion of the holder, said flange and extension being constructed to prevent the accidental disengagement of the cards and said rear end portion being constructed to project the end of each card beyond that of the card beneath.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB CllELIll'IER.
