HORATION. TAFT, OESAG HARB0R, NEW YORK.
Leners Patent No. 64,808, daad May 14, 1867.

@La dgehal aferra tu in tlgzse tttas ateut ma' mating gaat nf tige same,
Be it known that I, HORATIO N. TAFT, of Ithe town of Sag Harbor, in the county ot' Suffolk, and State of New York, have invented a new anduseful Portable Combination Door-Fastener; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 represents a sideview of the parts of the door-fastener put together.
Figure 2 is an edge view. I
Figure 3 represents it as when used and applied as a door-fastener. p
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the drawings.
My invention consists in so constructing a portable or pocket door-fastener that the parts of which it is composed shall both separately and in combination form articles, tools, or instruments of great convenience and utility.
My door-fastener is intended for fastening doors on the inside when the doors are destitute of locks or bolts, or when they are inoperative, and it is formed oftwo pieces, as represented in the drawing, marked A and B. A has a hook or bit at the end, which is forced into the casing or jamb of the door when itis applied s a fastener. There is a slot-hole through this piece at g, g.'1, which, in applying it as represented in lig. 3, is left just outside of the casing and door. This slot is made ot suitable size to admit the piece B with its edge against the door and casing, as represented. VIn this situationit acts as a stop or'bar to all entrance from the outside, unlessthe force applied to the door is suiicient to tear the bit E from the casing. When the two pieces A and B are combined, as in figs. 1 and 2, they form tweezers, which are useful for various purposes. A is curved, so that the ends are thrown apart when the tivo are combined. lThe end of A, and a goed portion of its length, is made thin and elastic, so that it readily springs under the pressure of the thumb when used as tweezers. There is another curve in A opposite the slot-hole, the pieces only being in actual Contact at two places. B is a straightsided piece, except that the extreme end is somewhat tapered to tit it for a small screwdrivler. To use it as such it is put through the slot as seen in iig. 3, when A serves as a handle. F is a ,small stud, with a button or conical hea-d. This head is passed through the slot at g, which at this end is made sir/ ciently large for that purpose. The other portion ot' theslot is narrow, so'that the head laps over the slot on each side. When the button-head is inserted at g, and the end ot' the screw-driver is slipped .up to the bit of A, the two are attached together as ruily as desired. The curve opposite the slot allows A to spring a little under the pressure ofthe button, thus creating sullicient friction to4 hold them in place. A screw Imay be used to hold the two together if desired. u
I do not confine myself to the particular manner of construction of the door-fastener as before described. As before stated, the two pieces may be held together as tweezers by a screw instead of the button-headed stud, or by a clasp or a sleeve; and the two pieces may bohooked ,together when' used as a door-fastener, so that the stud and slot might be altogether dispensed with. The-needle may' be attached to either of the pieces, and in any manner; but what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A combination portabledoor-fastener, constructed, combined, and operating. substantially asherein shown and de'scrib-ed.
