Beit known thatI, CATHERINE S. MCCOMB, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Book and Paper Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the holder containing one book; Fig. 2, a similar View, one cover being open and one end section of the holder being unfolded; Fig. 3, a plan View of the inside of the holder, the end sections being open; Fig. 4, a detail edge View showing the manner of making the main section of the holder from one piece of material; Fig. 5, a perspective View of the holder containing two books, and Fig. 6 an end elevation showing a strap and button for securing t0- gether the ends of the main section.

The object of the invention is to produce a device of simple construction which will securely hold the articles placed in it and which will be convenient to carry and neat in appearance.

Referring to the various parts by numerals, 1 designates the main section of the holder, and 2 the end sections, which are stitched to the main section at the ends thereof.

The main section is formed with the central thin flexible portion 3 and the end or pocket portions 4, each of said pocket portions consisting of a main pocket 5, which is substantially equal in area to the end portion and is open at its inner transverse edge to form the mouth 6 of the pocket, and the supplemental pockets 7 formed on the main pocket and extending transversely across the same at its inner or mouth end, the mouths of these pockets being at their outer ends. This main section is preferably made from a single strip of eXible material, such as leather or fabric, of suitable width and length, which is folded transversely upon itself at each of its ends to form the main pockets and is then folded outward to form the supplemental pockets 7 on the inner side of the main pockets 5, as is clearly shown in Fig. 4'. The longitudinal edges of the folded strip are then sewed to hold the strip in its folded position. The supplemental pockets are formedA by longitudinal rows of stitching 8, which fasten the pocket portion 7 to the inner wall of main pocket 5. The central transverse flexible section 3 is left between the mouths of the pockets 5 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.

The end sectionsare each formed of a strip of flexible material narrower than the main section and folded inward upon itself and stitched along its longitudinal edges to form the pockets 9, which are open at their inner ends only, and these pockets may be divided longitudinally, if desired, by rows of stitching, as at 10 in Fig. 3. To the outer corners of these end sections, on the inner side thereof, are secured hooks 11, and to the inner side of the main section are secured suitable loops 12, with which the hooks 11 are adapted to engage when the end sections are folded in 'upon the main section, as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 5. Any other suitable fastening means may be employed instead of the hooks. 1t is desirable, however, to employ such a fastening means as will not be readily detached by an outward strain on the inner edge of the end section.

By folding inward the end sections upon the main section whatever maybe placed in the pockets 7 and 9 will be securely locked in place against accidental displacement.

To each of the ends of the main section is secured a handle 13, by means of which the device when folded, as in Fig. 1, may be carried in the hand, and to securely lock these ends together a suitable strap and button 14. may be employed, said strap being secured to one of the ends of the main section, as shown in Fig. 6, and the button being secured to the other end thereof. Pencil and pen retaining tubes 15 are secured to the inner side of the main section, and a small pocket 16 is secured to the outer side of the main sect-ion and is provided with the closure-iiap 17, having a suitable fastening device 18.

The uses to which the device may be adapted will be readily appreciated. n Figs. 1 and 2 it is shown as a holder for one book, the back 19 of the book resting against the central portion 3 and one of the covers fitting within each of the main pockets 5. Within the smaller pockets 7 and 9 may be placed papers, envelops, cards, and similar articles, as shown in Fig. 3. When the end sections IOO are folded over and secu red in place by means of the hooks, the papers and other articles will be securely held in place in the pockets 7 and 9, and as the mouths of the pockets 5 are at the inner ends thereof the content-s of these pockets willgbe securely held in place when the device is folded, as in Fig. 1, and the handles 13 grasped in the hand or the ends of the main section secured together by the strap and button 14.

It will be readily understood that, ifdesired, two books may be carried in the holder, in which arrangement one cover of one book is placed in one main pocket 5 and one covex' of the other book is placed in the other pocket 5, as shown in Fig. 5. It will also be readily understood that the handles 13 may be dispensed with and the strap used alone, or any other means maybe employed to secure the main section in its folded position and to thereby retain the contents of the pockets in position.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A book and paper holder adapted to be folded and consistingv of a main section having a central flexible portion and a main pocket on each side of said central portion, open at its inner end adjacent the flexible portion, and supplemental pockets on theinner side of each of the main pockets and open at their outer ends; eXible end sections secured to the ends of the main section and adapted to be folded inward over the open ends of the supplemental pockets; and means for detachably securing these end sections in their folded positions.

2. A book and paper holder adapted to be folded and consisting of a main section havingr a central liexible portion and a main pocket on each side of said central portion and open at its inner end adjacent the central flexible portion, and supplemental pockets on the innerside of the main pockets and open at their outer ends; and iexible end sections secured to the ends of the main section and adapted to fold inward over the open ends of the supplemental pockets; means for detachably securing these end sections over the supplemental pockets; and a fastening device to secure the ends ofthe main section together to hold said section in its folded position.

3. A book and paper holder consisting of a main section having a central transverse fiexible portion and a main pocket on each side of the central portion said pocket being open at its inner end adjacent the central iiexible portion, and supplemental pockets on the inner side of the main pockets; and flexible end sections or strips secured to the main section and adapted to extend across the supplemental pockets; and means for detachably securing the free ends of said strips to the main section to hold the contents of the supplemental pockets in place.

4. A book and paper holder consisting of a main section formed of a single piece of flexible material folded inward upon itself at its ends and then folded outward at the inner ends of the folded-in portions and then secured together along its longitudinal edges to form the central Hexible portion, the inwardopening main pockets on each side of the central portion and the outward-opening supplemental pockets on the inner side of the main pockets; and flexible end pieces secured to the ends of the main section and adapted to fold over the open ends of the supplemental pockets; and means for detachably securing these end sect-ions in their folded positions.A

5. A combination carrier or holder composed of a main section having a cent-ral flexible portion adapting it to fold transversely and a book-cover-receiving pocket on each side of the flexible portion open at its inner end, a supplemental pocket on the inner side of one of said pockets, the mouth of this supplemental pocket being at the outer end of the cover-receiving pocket, and means for closing the supplemental pocket.
