Beit known that I, RICHARD F. DowNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Menominee, in the county of Menominee, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flag-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to Hag-holders; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out particularly in the claims.

The object of the invention is to provide a flag-holder of integral parts in which the arrangement is such as to securely hold the staff of the flag and allow of the holder being mounted or fastened to a round column or a iiat surface in a manner to enable the flag to be adjusted to any desired angle.

The above object is attained by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure is a perspective view of my improved flag-holder. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, showing the neck of the attaching spear-point twisted by turning the holder after said point has been entered to adjust the nag. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the holder. Fig. 4 is a plan view thereof, showing by dotted lines a possible movement of the holder after the attaching spear-point has been entered in any desired support.

Referring to the characters of reference, l designates a plate, preferably of sheet-steel of suitable temper, having at each end the integral jaws 2, projecting at right angles from said plate and being so curved as to form an enlarged opening 3 between them for the reception of the iiagsta, said jaws atthe opposite ends of the plate standing in horizontal alinement.

Struck from the geometric center of the plate l is a spear-point 4, connected with the body of the plate by a neck 5. The spearpoint 4 is thin and is adapted to be driven into a column or other support therefor parallel with the grain of the wood to avoid splitting or cutting across the grain. Said point has sufficient bearing-surface to securely hold the plate or body of the holder in place. After the holder is in position the flagstaff is forced between the jaws 2, which close upon said staff and maintain it therein.

After the flagstaff has been inserted in the jaws of the holder should it be found that said iiag does not stand at the desired angle the position of the flag may be changed by turning the holder so as to twist the neck 5 of the spear-point until said holder reaches the desired position, the quality of the material employed being of such a character as to allow of this operation, the spear-point and its attaching-neck being struck from the body of the plate 1 and bent outward at right angies thereto, said point being readily driven into the support for the holder by striking upon the face of said plate over the point of attachment of the neck thereto.

vAfter the holder has been secured in position it may be left permanently, if desired, as the flagstaff may be inserted in and withdrawn from the clamps thereof at will.

While I have described sheet-steel as the material from which the holder is formed, I do not wish to limit myself thereto, as other material may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A flag-holder, comprising a springmetal body portion provided with an attaching spear-point integral with and projecting centrally therefrom and having at the opposite ends opposed spring-jaws also formed integral With said body portion and shaped to receive and clamp the staff of a flag between them.

2.
