TO ALL WHOM'IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ELISH.; KEILEY, vof Locust Grove, in the county of Adams, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Broom-Head; and I do hereby declare-that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of' the construction and operation ot' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 ofsheetl is an end view of my improved broom-head.
'Figure 2, a vertical longitudinal section, as indicated by the lineav y of lig. 1.
Figure 3, an end View of the same, again showing a modification of the arrangement on which the broom is made.
Figure 4, a vertical longitudinal section, as indicated by the line op of tlg. 3.
Figure 5, ofv'Sheet 2, a view showing position ot' broom-head when ready for filling.
Like-letters, in the ditl'erent figures of the drawings, indicato like parts.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of two wire racks on which the'broom is made, and two sides or casings,.all suitably hinged to the head; one of the sides being so constructed as to form the ends and the edges thereof, and those of the other side so made as toform a clasp-jointv for securing the sides or casings for fastening the broom to the head. The object of hinging the sidesand the racks is that they may be entirely spread open, and thereby afford facility and convenience in` the operation of making the broom.
It will be perceived, as will hereinafter be particularly described, that the simplicity of my improvement is such that its construction isattended with comparatively but little expense, and that almost any one can make a broom with it, and, besides, possessing an advantage in the readiness with which the sides orcasings can be unclasped, and a new broom made when the old has worn out.
To enable anyone skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. i v v A A represent the sides of heavy tin sheeting or brass suitably hinged to the head B of like material. One of the sides, in laying them off, is cutwider thitn the other, sufficiently to form the ends a ot' the broom-head. The edge of the ends and those of the other side are properly bent over, in reverse directions, to form clasps b b b b. O O areithe wire racks, constructed in the manner seen in gs. 2 and 5, and Vhinged to hooks, or in any suitable manner. D is a stay attached to screw-bolt connecting with broom-handle.
The sides andracks of the broom-head are spread open atly, (see g. 5 ot' sheet 2,) and the broom-stalks inserted in the holes of theracks until suiciently full, when theyV are brought up and the sides closed and securely fastened by the edge ot' the end of one side clasping the edge ot' the other, and the joints thus made tightened with a hammer, In closing the sides the broom `will become necessarily fastened to the racks by the sides bearing against the bent-over stalks of the broom. The stay, being in the centre of the two racks, will give a rmness to the head of the broom. The racks may be dispensed with, if desired, and a plate, E, (see figs. 3 and 4,) with scmicircular perforations, attached the same as the stay, andthe stalks filled in the perforation's from both sides, and the casing or sides closed as above. This plate at the same time will answer the purpose of the stay. To dive'st the broom-head of as much weight as possible, and thus make it easier for the handling of the b room, I cut out pieces c c from the sides, andmakethe side with the ends about one-half, (see igs. l and ,i i Having thus fully described my'invention, what I claim therein as new,'and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is- .A i i 1. The construction of wire racks, in combination with hinged or permanently fixed casings or sides, substantially in the manner and for the purpose as herein set forth.- 4
p 2. The combination of the stay with the wire racks, substantially in the manner and for the'purpose'as herein set forth.
