T0 @ZZ who/mit may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAaLns E. POWELL, of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Bags, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to feed-bags for horses and other draft-animals; and, as hereinafter described, my improvements comprise a bag of canvas or similar flexible material provided at its mouth with an annular frame arranged to hold the saine distended when in use, said frame being composed of sections hi'ngedly connected and arranged to be folded when the bag is collapsed, said frame being supported in use by strut-rods extending to the haines and by cords or other flexible connectors extending to the head-harness.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of a convenient embodiment of my invention in position for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the bag-mouth frame folded in collapsed position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 1, but showing a modified form of my invention.
In said figures, A. is a bag of canvas or si milar flexible material, and B is an annular frame, comprising sections h, secured in the hem ci at the mouth of said bag and hingedly connected at b intermediate of what I term the width thereof between the strut-rods C. Each of the frame-sections h comprises a loop or eye h2, and the respective loops are pivotally engaged by the strut-rods C, which are provided at their free extremities with means to engage the haines or some part of the animal-harness adjacent thereto. I nd it convenient to provide said rods C with rigid hooks c and also with pivoted hooks c', either or both of which may he utilized, in accordance with the particular construction of harness employed. Said rods C are so proportioned as to maintain the mouth of the bag in convenient relation with the head of the ani: mal, to whose head-harness it is attached by ilexible connectors, such as cords or chains I). Said connectors D are conveniently secured at their lower extremities in the loops h2 of the bag-frame and are each provided at their upper extremities with one or more pivoted hooks d to afford a desirable range of adjustment with respect to the head-harness.
In the form of my invention shown in Fig, l, with the iiexible connectors D secured to the bag-frame B at single points diametrically opposite the bag-frame may rock on its pivotal connections to the rods C in the direction of their length, and to limit such motion of the bag I provide said frame with the brace-bar E, which is pivotally connected with the frame B at the hinge connection b. The opposite extremities of said bar E being turned inwardly engage the rods C, as indicated in Fig. l, when the bag is in the position for use and limit the aforesaid motion of the frame B.
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 3 the bar E is omitted and the flexible connectors D are bifurcated at their lower eX- tremities and each 'connected with the bagframe B at two points d.
It is one of the advantages of my invention that the device above described may be conveniently folded and stored beneath a vehicleseat until desired for use, the frame A. being folded, as indicated in Fig. 2, and, together with the rods C and the bar E, (turned parallel therewith,) enwrapped by the collapsed bag A. to form a compact and substantially flat package. i
I do not desire to broadly claim a feed-bag which is collapsible or provided with a frame which may be folded, as such devices are Well known in the art. However, I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction which I have shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention.
I claiml. In a feed-bag, the combination with a cylindrical bag of flexible material; of an annular frame comprising hingedlyponnected semicircular members secured to tho mouth of the bag, and arranged to distend the latter; strut-rods respectively pivoted to said frame members and provided at their free extremities with means to engage the haines; flexible connectors respectively secured to said frame members, and provided at their ICO free extremities with means adapted to engage the head-harness; and a'brace-bar permanently secured to said frame, by pivotal connection With the hinge thereof, and provided at its extremities With means to detachablyengage said strut-rods, substantially as set forth.
2. In a feed-bag, the combination With a bag of flexible material; of a frame secured at the mouth of said bag, comprising opposite counterpart members hingedly connected intermediate of the Width of the bag; strutrods respectively pivoted to the opposite members of said frame, and provided with means attheir free extremities adapted to engage the harness; flexible. connectors, respectively secured to the opposite members of said frame, and provided at their free extremities with means adapted to engage the harness; and a brace-bar permanently secured to said frame, by pivotal connection With the hinge thereof, and provided at its extremities with means to detachably engage said strut-rods, substantially as set forth.
3. In a feed-bag, the combination with a bag of flexible material; of a frame secured at the mouth of said bag, comprising opposite members hingedly connected intermediate of the Width of the bag; strut-rods respectively pivoted to the opposite members of said frame and provided at their free extremities With means adapted to engage the harness; iiexible connectors respectively secured to the opposite members of said frame, and provided at their free extremities With means adapted to engage the harness; and a brace-bar secured to said frame and arranged to detachably engage said strut-rods, substantially as set forth.
4. In a feed-bag, the combination with a bag of flexible material; of a frame secured at the mouth of said bag, comprising opposite members hingedly connected intermediate of the Width of the bag, the axes of said hinges being parallel With the top of the bag; strut-rods independently pivoted to the opposite members of said frame and provided at their free extremities with means adapted to engage the harness; and iiexible connectors independently secured to the opposite members of said frame and arranged to engage the harness, substantially as set forth.
5. In a feed-bag, the combination With a bag of flexible material; of .a frame secured at the mouth of said bag, comprising opposite members hingedly connected intermediate of the Width of the bag; strut-rods re spectively pivoted to the opposite members of said frame and provided at their free extremities with means adapted to engage the harness; flexible connectors respectively secured to the opposite members of said frame, and arranged to engage the harness; and means to adj ustably vary the length of said connectors in engagement with the harness, substantially as set forth.
