OLIVER MOBLAND, OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
MULTIPLE CARBON-SHEET BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 683,782, dated October 1, 1901.
Application filed June I9, 1900.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER MORLAND, printer, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 31 Carlyle road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, in the county of \Varwick, England, have invented a certain new and useful Multiple Carbon-Sheet Binder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a multiple carbonsheet binder or carbon-sheets used in connection with type-writers for duplicating or copying original matter at the same time as it is written. Usually such carbons are loose sheets which in use are placed in layers between paper to bear the written and copied matter.
This invention is a multiple carbon-sheet binder or carbon-sheets built up in the manner hereinafter described and illustrated, the last-named by the annexed sheet of drawings.
Figure 1 of the said drawings is a front elevation, Fig. 2 a vertical section, and Fig. 3 a transverse section, of the said carbon folio, the sections Figs. 2 and 3 being respectively upon the lines A and B, Fig. 1.
In the figures a multiple carbon-binder comprising four carbon-sheets a, c, d, and e is shown, the top edges of the said sheets being bound together at f by a protecting sheet or backing g of paper or other suitable material (said backing extending the full area of the carbon-sheet e and being turned over at g in the manner shown) connected to the said carbon sheets by a line of stitching g or other suitable and preferably flexible fastening device, connecting the whole of the carbons together, so as to leave the turned-over edge g free. A tab or flap h is also formed upon the edge g.
It will be seen from the sections, Figs. 2 and 3, that by so binding together the edges of the carbon-sheets a groove or pocket, with the stitching-line at the bottom of each, is formed between each carbon-sheet, between the backing g and the last carbon-sheet, and between the turned-over edge g and the first carbon-sheet, into which said grooves or pock- Serial No. 20,892. (No model.)
ets the ends of the sheets of paper to bear the written and copied matter can be tucked or inserted to materially help to hold them in po sition within the carbon-binder and set them true to each other. It will also be seen from the drawings that the backing 9 extends the whole surface of the carbon-sheets, so as to protect them from damage, the edges of the said backing being out true to or to register with the edges of the carbon-sheets. The turning over of the backing g at g in the manner shown gives one edge only to be in troduced into the type-writer around the platen and greatly facilitates the introduc tion of the papers into the machine.
A multiple carbon-binder so formed has many further advantages, some of which are that there are no loose carbon-sheets requiring arrangement in the building up of a duplicating carbon-binder, the life of the carbons are extended by the backing protecting their edges, and the papers bearing the written and copied matter can be placed into position, with the line of stitching as a guide or setting as asecurity of the written matter on each sheet being written true or in line.
The tab or flap h is for laying hold of to shake the sheets of paper out of the binder and from between the carbons.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In combination, a plurality of carbon-sheets having trued edges, a back therefor formed of flexible material and bent upon itself to form a flap extending over the trued edges of said carbon-sheets, and a row of stitching extending entirely across the said flap and through the same, the back and the carbonsheets for connecting the latter to the former.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OLIVER MORLAND. Witnesses:
GEO. FUERY, A. F. BIDDLE.
