Be itknown that I, GUsTAvUs A. PADDOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaverdamin the county of Dodge and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckle-Shields, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates more especially to that class of shields applied to buckles used for uniting the cross-lines of double harness, although my invention may obviously be applied to similar buckles used for other purposes.

The object of my invention is to provide a form of shield which may be readily interlocked with the buckle at the heel or pintlebar thereof and which will cotiperate with the straps secured by the buckle in such a manner that each will aid in retaining the other in position, regard being had for simplicity of structure and design, whereby the shield may be formed of cast or stamped metal and all machine-work thereon avoided.

In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top View of a buckle with my improved shield applied thereto as it appears when in use. Figs. 2 and 3 are longitudinal sectional and side views of the same,

Like parts are identified by the same reference-letters throughout the several views.

In the drawings, F represents the buckleframe; G, the pintle-bar or heel thereof; H, the tongue, and JJ brackets or side stops which serve as guides for the strap E.

I is the strap on which the buckle is located and to which it is usually permanently attached, this strap passing around the pintiebar G, as best shown in Fig. 2.

Referring to the shield, it will be observed that at its front end it is constructed in the ordinary manner, with a buckle-cover A, provided with downwardly-extending arms, connected by the cross-bar D, the strap E being passed between the cross-bar D and cover portion A, as also best shown in Fig. 2. At its rear end the shield is provided with side bars B, having lugs B, adapted to engage the upper surface of the frame of the buckle. The side bars B are also formed with a downwardly-extending loop, in which when the shield is in position the pintle-bar G of the buckle is adapted to rest, with the rear ends of the bar B extended upwardly in the rear of the pintle-bar and united by a cross-bar C. The latter when the straps are in place is located above the strap I, and the strap E may also be passed underneath the bar 0, if desired. With this construction it will be observed that when the straps are removed the shield may be readily engaged with or disengaged from the buckle.

WVhen the shield is adjusted to the buckle and the strap I is in position, the parts are held together by the interlocking engagement of the lugs B on the upper surface of the buckle-frame, the looped portions of the bar 15 on the under surface of the pintle-bar G, and the cross-bar 0, located above the strap I in the rear of the pintle-bar.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A buckle-shield detachable from the buckle,comprisingacover-plate formed atone end with a strap-engaging portion, and at the other end with arms adapted to interlock with the buckle at the heel thereof.

2. A buckle-shield detachable from the buckle, comprisinga cover-plate; oppositelyprojecting strap-engaging portions; and interlocking bearings for the pintle-bar of the buckle.

3. A buckle-shield, comprising a coverplate; a downwardly-projecting strap-engaging portion at its front end; rearWardly-projecting arms provided with downwardly-extending loops adapted to receive the pintlebar of the buckle; and a cross-bar connecting said arms above, and in the rear of, said pintle-bar.

4. A buckle-shield, provided with strapengaging portions at each end thereof; and interlocking bearings adapted to hold the shield and the buckle together when the adjustable strap is disengaged.

5.
