IMPROVEMENT IN TANNING.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, CHARLES J. Cosnme, B. F. WALLS, and WILLIAM A. W001), all of" Hancock county, in the State of Kentucky, have invented a new and improved Method of Tanning; and we do hereby declare that the following is a. full and exact description thereof.
The nature of our invention consists in the use of, in the process of tanning hides and the dressing of furs, the following-described articles: common salt, starch, alum, sulphuric acid, and the extracts of oak, hemlook, and other barks, the whole forming one combined liquid tanning solution, as herein set forth and described.
We use common salt, starch, alum, and sulphuric acid, to destroy the bony structure and do the hating oi the hides, in the following proportions: To forty gallons of water, fifty pounds of common salt; to thirty gallons of water, ten pounds of starch; to thirty gallons of water, ten pounds of alum. Then to this we add eight pounds of sulphuric acid, and asmuch of the extracts of bark as will be necessary to accomplish the end sought for. In the dressing of furs the same proportions are used without the extracts of bark.
We do not claim that said articles are not used in the tanning and dressing of hides and furs; but what we do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
