IMPROVEMENT IN CURING TOBACCO-STEMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 7,00 l dated January '8, 1850.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HOYT, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have discovered a certain new and valuable Method of Treating and Preparing Tobacco for Use; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the manner of making and compounding the same.
My discovery consists mainly in treating a certain part of the tobacco-plant which is now considered refuse, and is of little or no value. This part is the stem or skeleton of the leaf. This stem is exhibited in sample No. 1, and, as shown, of a pale sickly color and faint disagreeable smell and taste. This, after it is prepared,as I shall now describe, becomes of a fine brown colorand good aromaand muchimproved in taste, and is every way fit smoking-tobacco, as exhibited in sample No. 3. To prepare the tobacco I take a lot of the stem as it comes out into fine shreds or grains from the mill, which is in a damp or moist condition at the time. I then prepare a lot of charcoal by grinding it to an impalpable powder. This done, the charcoal is to be added to the stem,
prepared as above, in its damp state, in the proportion of seven ounces of charcoal to five pounds of stem or refuse tobacco. The compound is then to be thoroughly mixed and dried, when it will be found that the tobacco has become sweetened by the charcoal, and is at the same time made a good color, and the taste is also much improved, as also the general quality of the same. By this means I am enabled to produce an excellent article for consumption from refuse tobacco or stem. I do not confine myself to the proportions above named, as they may be varied, and do require some variations to suit different kinds of tobacco or the production of more or less color, as the case may be.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The process of curing the stem or other parts of tobacco with charcoal by combining or mixing the two together, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
