UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
eLnEsoN, OF DEERLODGE,
PUTTYING-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 708,709, dated September 9, 1902.
Application filed June 11, 1902. Serial No. 111,142. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ELLA T. HENNEBERRY and MARGARET M. GLEESON, citizens of the United States, residing at Deerlodge, in the county of Powell, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puttying-Tools; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to puttying-tools employed for glazing; and it has for its object to provide a tool having a hollow handle for holding the putty and from which handle the putty may be fed into position to be acted upon by the blade of the knife, thus permitting the puttying operation to be done with one hand instead of requiring two hands, as is commonly the case.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction which will be durable and in which the handle will possess a degree of rigidity suflicient to permit of convenient operation of the knife while being com pressible.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be understood from the following description.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure l is a perspective viewofaputtying-knife embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a central section taken longitudinally through the puttying-knife.
Referring now to the drawings, the present putty-knife comprises a handle portion and a blade portion, and the handle consists of a central collapsible body portion 5, having the form of a cylindrical tube and at the ends of which are fixed the metal end pieces 6 and 7. The end piece 6 is in the form of a cap, and from this end piece projects the blade 8, the inner end portion of which is formed double and one side 90f which blade projects beyond the opposite side 10, there being a slot 11 at the outer end of the portion 10, through which the putty is discharged from the tube upon the blade. The member 7 is in the form ofa band which is threaded to receive a cap or closure 12, and the members 6 and 7 are conheld with the slot 11 next to the surface to be puttied, and as the knife isdrawn along in the usual manner the handle is squeezed or compressed, so that the putty is discharged through the slot 11 against the portion 9 of the-blade and is manipulated by the latter in the usual manner to force the putty into the position that it is to occupy.
By the use of the stiffening bar or band 13 the blade and handle are maintained in proper correlation, thus preventing the defects that would be incident to the use of a handle having no stability.
' It will be understood that modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and that any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is- 1. A puttying-tool comprising a blade,a collapsible handle connected to the blade and adapted to deliver its contents to the blade and a rigid connection between the ends ofv the "handle.
2. A puttying-toolcomprising a blade and a collapsible handle connected thereto, said handle having metallic terminals to one of which the blade is directly connected and the other of which is open, arigid connection between the metallic terminals and a closure for the open metallic terminal, the blade having an opening therethrough leading from the handle and arranged to deliver putty to the blade.
In testimony whereof we affiX our signatures in presence of two witnesses. I
ELLA T. HENNEBERRY. MARGARET M. GLEESON.
