UNITED STATES EDWIN F. LAWRENCE, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN H. LAWRENCE,
OF STERLING, ILLINOIS.
DOOR-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 713,1 1 5, dated November 1 1, 1902.
' Application filed Augustll, 1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN F. LAWRENCE, acitizen of the United States of America, and aresident of Sterling, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to the singletrack type of door-hangers, and has for its ob ject to provide a simple, strong, and durable arrangement of parts which will permit of the door being swung outward away from the doorway at its lower end for ventilating and other like purposes, all as will hereinafter more fully appear, and be more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrative of the present invention, Figure 1 is an end elevation of a door-hanger embodying the present invention; Fig. 2, a rear elevation of the same; Figs. 3 and 4, fragmentary transverse s'ectional elevations of modified forms of the pivot-eyes on the bearing-plate-of the hanger-frame.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the longitudinal track member secured in a horizontal position to ,the wall of the building or other structure by attaching brackets 2'to attain a separated relation between the wall and the track.
3 is the track roller or pulley, formed with the usual grooved periphery to fit the track- 'rail and provided with the usual lateral trunnions or journal-pins 4, by means of which it is journaled in the upper end of the hangerframe.
5 is an inverted-U-shaped plate constituting the part of the hanger in which the trunnion-pins f the track-roller 3 have bearing in any usual and well-known manner.
6 is a pendent hook-shaped extension on the pulley-frame 5, adapted to engage under the track member 1 to prevent independent side movement of such pulley-frame with relation to such track member.
7 is a pendent strap, of which there may be one or more to each individual hanger, the lower end of which is adapted for substantial attachment to the door and the upper end of which is hook shape, so as to engage over and have bearing upon the crown of the pulley- Serial No. 119,199. (No model.)
frame to afford a substantial support to the door.
The construction so far described is usual and common to door-hangers now in general use, and the novelty of the present invention consists in a particular construction and arrangement of parts, as follows:
8 represents pivot-eyes formed or secured upon the rear face of the pulley-frame 5 at points adjacent to the crown thereof.
9 represents companion pivot-eyes formed at the free and rear end of the hook-shaped upper portion of the hanger-strap 7, the arrangement being such that such eyes may be pivotally connected together by a-horizontal pintle or rod 10.
With the present improved construction the door is very substantially supported in a manner entirely independent of and without any strain upon the pintle-rod 10, in that all the downward stress of the door is wholly taken by the hook-shaped upper end of the hanger-strap 7. The only time that any strain is upon the pintle-pin 10 is when the door is tilted so as to be open along its bottom, in which condition the hanger parts will assume the position indicated in dottedlines in Fig. 1.
In the practical manufacture of the present invention the pivot-eyes 8 of the pulley-frame 5 may be made as separate parts and be riveted in place, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, or they may be integrally formed in said frame, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to sec-ure by Letters Patent, is
The combination in a door-hanger, of a pulley-frame having an inverted-U form, a trackpulley journal in the same, a hanger-strap provided with a hook-shaped upper end engaging over the crown of the pulley-frame aforesaid, and means for pivotally connecting the hanger-strap and the pulley-frame together the same comprising pivot-eyes arranged on the back of the pulley-frame, companion pivot eyes on the free end of the hanger-strap, and a pivot-pintle connecting said eyes together, substantially as set forth.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 4th day of August, 1902.
. EDWIN F. LAWRENCE.
