JEFFREY T. FERRES, OF ANDERSON, INDIANA.
PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 713,624, dated November 18, 1902.
Application filed November 19, 1901. Serial No. 82,897. (lilo model.)
T0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEFFREY T. Fnnnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson,in the county of Madison, in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention has for its primary object the provision of a simple, cheap, and convenient box for the reception and handling of blocks or bricks of ice-cream, but useful for other purposes as well.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank for the bottom portion or body of my improved box; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the same folded into box form; Fig. 8, a vertical crosssection of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a plan View of the blank from which the top or lid portion of my improved box is formed; Fig. 5, a perspective view of the same folded into lid form; Fig. 6, a perspective view of the box of Fig. 2 with the lid of Fig. 5 applied thereto, and Fig. 7 a vertical cross-section of Fig. 6.
The same letters of reference are used to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The bottom or body portion of the box is composed of the rectangular bottom A, the end walls B D, hinged to the opposite ends thereof and provided with the extensions B D, the front and rear walls E C, hinged to the front and rear edges of the bottom A and provided with the end extensions 9 e and c c and with the outer extensions E C, respectively. The end walls B D are flared outwardly from the ends of the bottom'A to their junction with the extensions B D, while the latter are tapered inwardly from their junction with the end walls B D to their outer ends. The rear and front walls 0 E are likewise flared outwardly from the bottom A to their junction with the extensions 0 E, while the latter are tapered inwardly from such junctionlines to their outer ends. It results from this construction that when "the blank is folded into box form, as in Fig. 2, the body of the box is outwardly flared from its bottom to the upper edges of its side and end walls, as shown. The end extensions 06 of the side walls of the box are folded inwardly and pasted to the end walls B D to secure the box in shape.
The lid of the box shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is a substantial duplicate of the bottom portion or body of the box, excepting that it is unprovided with any vertical extensions of its side and end walls corresponding to the extensions B O D" E of the walls of the body of the box. WVhen folded into lid form, as in Fig. 5, and secured therein by the past ing of the side extensions 0 c to the end walls B D, the lid is adapted to fit down over the tapered vertical extensions B O D E of the body of the box and inclose and be supported by the same, as shown in Fig. 6.
The complete box, including the lid, is made of about the some height as the thickness of the ordinary brick of ice-cream, so that when the latter is placed in the bottom portion or body of the box about one-half of it will project above the walls of the box, thus permitting it to be conveniently grasped for insertion in or removal from the box. The flaring shape of the box not only facilitates the insertion and removal of the block of cream, but it permits the boxes, and their lids also, to fit snugly within one another and be nested in compact form for storage and shipment.
The pasting-flaps c e may of course be transposed from the side walls 0 E to the end walls B D and be pasted to the side walls 0 E instead of being arranged as shown in the drawings.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim- 1. A paper box comprising a bottom having hinged thereto vertically extending outwardly-flaring side andend walls provided with inwardly-tapering vertical extensions, and a lid composed of a top portion and vertically-depending outWardly-fiarin g side and end walls adapted to fit over and inclose and be supported by thevertically-projecting tapering extensions of the side and end walls of the body of the box; substantially as described.
2. The herein-described box -body,com prising the rectangular bottom A, the outwardlyfiaring end walls B D hinged thereto and provided with the inwardly-tapering extensions B D, and the outwardly-flaring side walls 0 E provided with the inwardly-tapering extensions C E and with the end extensions 0 e pasted to the end Walls B D, in combination with the lid comprising the rectangular top A, outwardly-flaring end Walls B D, and the outwardly-flaring side Walls 0 E provided with the end extensions 0 e pasted to the end extensions B D, and adapted to fit down over and inclose and be supported by the vertically-projecting tapered extensions B G" D E upon the body of the box; substantially as described.
3. The herein-described box-body comprising the bottom A, the outwardly-flaring end walls 13, D, and side Walls 0, E, all hinged to said bottom and the separate pairs of extensions B D and O E hinged respectively to the said end walls and the said sidewalls, in combination with a lid comprising the top A having the outwardly-flaring end walls B D and the outwardly-flaring side Walls 0' E which lid is adapted to fit down over and inclose and be supported by the said extensions B O D E upon the body of the box; substantialiy as described.
4 A paper box comprising a bottom and side and end walls provided with inwardlytapering extensions hinged to their respective Walls but separate from each other and a lid composed of a top and outwardly flared or tapered side and end Walls adapted to fit over said inwardly-tapering extensions and forming an oblique joint therewith; substantially as described.
