i Letters Patent No. 72,113, dated .December 10, 1867. n
IMPROVEMENl.1 IN APOR'IABLE FENCE.
@in dgnnlc nfernt tr iii ilgrsietters gatcnt nu 'milling nrt at tige snm.
TO ALL WHOM I'IF MAlr ICQNCERN:
Beit known that I, GEORGED. SWEIGERT, of Martic township, in the county of Lancaster, and Stato of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful combination or inode for -constructing a Portable Fence; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication, in which- Figurc l1 gives a view of several panels of this fence in line.
Figure 2, the same, on a reduced scale, surrounding a stack in the iield.
Figure 3 shows a corner, also detached figures of each part employed.
Figure 4 shows how pales can be applied to tho upper and lower rails, rif desired.
The nature of this fenceeonsists in each piece employed being independent, requiring `no nail or screw fastening, and can be set up or taken apart, lso* that the rails, posts, base-plates, and every sppar'ate portion canbe packed away or piled up in a small space, making a neat and` durable fence, which can be set straight,l zigzag, or at any angle, each panel moving on the post, as a pivot, in any direction To enable any one skilled to make and use my invention, it is only necessary to lsay that the posts are ofrolled one-inch iron, of the 4desired length. Theife'r'rul'es or. sleeves D are'cast ofuniform length 'and thickness, with an inch bore. E, an ornamental head.;- F, a washer; and G, a keyior wedge. The -railsB being cut of a uniform length, scarfcd'ont halt` way, Aon the reverse sides of the ends, -and an inch hole bored through the projecting .ends, centrally, the fencing -materals are all ready, including the base-plato A, also cast, with a hole in the centralraised and narrowed portion, as shown.
' To erect the fence, all that is necessary is to lay down the foot or bed-plateA, insert the round iron post C; key it fast. Slip down a washer or ring, F; key ittast with a key, G. The lower. rail is now put in place, byinsertinglthe top of the posts into the holeson each'uscarfed end, working in the direction so that when the first rail is presseddown upon the wpsher or ring the projection will he on the` under side. .When-the lower rails are in place, a sleeve or ferrule, B, is slipped down upon the lower rails, united by their scart'ed ends, which, when slightly rounded, will turn in any direction on the post, as on a' pivot. So in succession the rails are put in place with the intervening supports D; The projecting top is ornainented with a washer, keyed on, and an ornamental head', E, it' desirable. The facility with 'which the fence can be set up,`tn1 'ncd in any direction, sa as to surround grain stacks, set zigzag or otherwise, besides'its neatness, presents man-yadvantziges.
' When we consider the durability and cheapness, as well as the convenience of using the castings and wrought` iron posts n combination with the wooden rails, tho small advance in price over many other portable fences will be but a slight objection, if any at all, to the adoption of this arrangement. The steps can be inserted in the soil, or held by a wooden peg, to givegrcater firmness, orto accommodate the same to inequalities in the ground.
I am aware of the numerous combinations and arrangements of portable fences patented; but I am not aware of any combination of this speciiic'arrangement; nor do I claim any portion ofthe same, separately considered, apart from the combination of the whole, as herein shown and specified.
What I claim as my invention, is
.A portable fence, combined ot' round wrought-iron posts C, bed-plate A, rails B, scaried, and applied with intervening ferrules D, head and bottom washers F, all arranged in theV manner and for the purpose specified.
GEORGE l). SWEIGERT.
