Description

@uiten tuts latwt @fitta JOHN MAR-CHBANK, OF LANSINGBURG, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM H. LOW, OF SAME PLAGE.
Leiters Patent No. 73,822, dated January 28, 1868,
IMPROVEMENT' IN .FAUGETSI TO ALL WI-IOM IT MAY CON CERN Beit known that I, JOHN MARCHBANK, of Lansingburg, in the county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molasses-Fauccts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear', and exact description of thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a portion of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front view of a faucet made according to my invention.
Figure 2 is a side view and partial section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
The object of this invention is to insure a perfectly tight closing of' the faucet when not in use, and a-lscpto secure the retention ofthe gate thereof in position when the same is raised to open the faucet.
The invention consists in so combining a guide-brace with the tubular body of the faucet, and the gate thereof, that the said brace will operate tolrmly hold the gate in position, either to close or open the faucet.
The invention further consists in certain novel arrangements of inclined planes upon the outer side of the` gate, and in relation with the transverse guide-brace in front thereof, whereby the. desired objects are attained with less friction upon the brace than if such inclined planes were dispensed with.
The invention further consists in a stop,"so applied to the gate, and in such relation with the brace, that any accidental displacement of the gate in opening the same is eifectually prevented.
To enable others to understand the construction and operation of myinvention, I will proceed to'describe it with reference to thc drawings.
A represents the tubular body of the faucet, of any suitable form or construction, and B shows the gate pivoted at one side of the face thereof, as shown more fully in iig. l. Secured in front of the gate is the trans-A verse bar C, which not only serves as a guido to assist in retainingl the gate in position while being moved, but also as a brace to hold'the gate properly in place whether in position to open or close the faucet. In order to insure the perfect closing of the orifice or mouth a of the faucet, when the gate is pushed downward, without the friction attendant upon a swing pressure of the gate aga-inst the brace O, during its entire movement, an inclined plane, 6, is formed upon the upper part ot' the front or face ofthe said gate, in the position shown moreA fully in fig. l, and in such manner that when the gate is `forced downward, the aforesaid inclined plane b being pressed against the guide-brace, will force or crowd the gate tightly against the front of the body A, over the orifice a, thus eifeetually closing the faucet. A similar inclined plane, c, but placed somewhat nearer' the pivot of the gate, in such relation with the guide-brace that when the gate is raised in the usual manner to open the faucet, the said inclined plane will bind against the brace7 and the gate being thus snugly held between the brace and the upper part of the face-end ofthe bcdy'A, will be prevented from falling by its own weight when the faucet is in use. Projecting forward from the lower part of the frontl of thc gate is a stud, ai?, which, by limiting the upward movement ofthe gate, in case the inclined plane e should bc carried past the' brace, effectually prevents the accidental displacement of the gate in thus opening the faucet.
What I claimas my invention, and desire t'o secure by Letters Patent, is
1. rlhe arrangement of the guide-brace C in relation to the gate B and the body A, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The inclined plane b, provided uponthe gate, and arranged in relation with the body A and the guidebrace C, substantially as and for the purpose specified. i
3. The inclined plane e, arranged upon the gate, and in relation with the body A and guide-brace C, sub stantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. The stud ai, arranged upon the gate, and in relation with the guide-brace, substantially as and for the purpose specified. J MARGHBANK Witnesses: l
