Description

Y Quinn fettes stmtkffce.
SAMUEL MARDEN, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.V
Letters Patent No. 74,234, dated February 1`l, i868.
IllIlROVElMENTv -IN DEVICE POR OBTAINING MOTION BY MEANS OF IRIGT'IQN'.
Be it known that I, SAMUEL MARDEN, of Newton, eounty of Middlesex, and State of lllasisachusctts, have invented a new and useful Device for Obtaining Motion by Friction; and I do hereby declare that the' fllowing is a. full and exa-ct description of the same2 reference beingJ had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a. longitudinal elevation.
Figure 2 is a side elevation.
A is a'friction-wheel, a its rim, and b its shaft. d is the spur-gear, fixed to its rear side, which moves the y-wheel B through its fixed pinion,f, xed upon its shaft e. D is a lever, freely moving on the shaft b, to
which is attached the pawl or friction-catch z", by its pivotj. The connecting-rod L connects the lever with` the treadle C. By the ,motion of the treadle C the connecting-rod t, descending, drawsdown one end of the lever D, and the other end ascending, forces the pawl z', in its effort 'to revolve with the lever, against the rim a, until the wheel Ais forced to revolve from the inereasinfr pressure of theleverage, thus communicating motion to the fly-Wheel B. This end of the lever, descending'by the motion of the treadle, itspawl descends with it, sliding by its own weight easily down on the rim a, in position to again revolve the wheel, byanother upward motion of that end of the lever.
It is applicable whenever the common crank-motion is used, and from the greater amount of power obtained, and the small distance through which it is necessary for the lever to work, whilst the motion aixplied corresponds with the'line of revolution, it seems fa'r preferable. It is always ready, there is no dead-centre, and no going backwards.
What I cloim is, the wheel A, `with its rim a, in combination with the lever D and its pawl z', substantially vas described.
SAMUEL: MARDEN.
