Leners Paten.: No. 74,312, dated Femm/11, 186s.
IMPROVED METALLIC COLUMN.
@the tienne trfrrrch tu im ilgsr cttcts gaitnit :mi mating tart mf tige sume.
vTo ALL WHoM IT MAY eoNcERN= Be it known that I, JOHN B. CORNELL-of the city, county, and Stute of New York, have invented'nn Improved Fire-Proof Column for architectural purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. fullV and exuet description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, which form `a portion of this speeieation.
My improved {ire-proof column is composed of a' strong interior metallic` tube, a, und a thinner exterior metallic tube, 6, the said tubes bei-ng combined with ench other, substantially in the Vmannerrepresented in the accompanying drawings. The inner tube a must be suiiciently strong to safely bear whatever weight may be placed upon my said improved {ire-proof column, of which it forms n. port, und` should be 4of suilcient length, and be supplied with the requisite flanges, stays, and brackets, to enable said tube to be combined with the plates d, the'girders lc, and also with thethinner und shorter exterior tube b. The desired architectural shape is given to the lexterior surface of the exterior tube b, and there must be a suiiicient width oflopn space between.
the outer surface ofthe inner tube e andthe' inner surface of the tube b, to protect the said inner tube from any of the injurious eiects resulting from heating and suddenl cooling, in case the building in which my improved column muy be plaeedpshould be injured by lire; the said exterior tube I; being intended to perform the func- Vtion of giving exterior architectural comeliness to the column, and also of protecting therinterior or supporting tube or shaft a from the injurious effects of heating and sudden cooling during n. eonlngration of the premises where it may be loca-ted, and, therefore, it may be made quite thin, and, if preferred, may be made up of sections. Tliis outer tube may be extensively cracked by the eects of fire and water, and yet furnish an ample` protection to the inner `or supporting tube a, of my improved tirefproof column.- Should the said outer tube at' any time be extensively cracked by the eifects of ro and Water, it may be removed from the interior tube a,
and its place be supplied by a. new exterior casing formed of sections.
Havingpthus fully described my improved re-proof architectural column, what I claim therein as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The construction and arrangement with each other of the interior ilangedsupportiug portion a and. the exterior protecting and ornamental casing b, substantially in the manner herein set forth.
JOHN B. CORNELL.
