TO ALL WHOM IT MA'Y COIICERII:v
t Be it known thatI, MILroN CLJEFFEBS, of the city, county, and Stute f Newl York, have invented a new r; and improved Combined Fodder-C'nttery and Corn-Husking Machine; and I do hereby declare that `the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art'to make and use t the come, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference-marked thereon.
Heretcforc a cornlhusker has beeu'forn'ied byu.` cylinder of knives, acting againsta roller, to press oi` the cars of corn, and Vsaid ears' are husked bye. pair of inclined rollers, down which theyslide endwse. Foddercutters have also been made 'witha roller` and cylinder of cutters. The coru-,hnsking machine is used buta small portion of the year, while a-fodder-cutter is in more constant requisition.' i
Y, The nature of lxnysaid invention consists in acorn-huskingmachine, constructedsothat the roller and cylinder of knives can bereversed, and employed eitherin' cutting fodder or in pressing o the ears of corn, and said corn-husker isprovided with a sliding table that covers up thehopper for the ears inthe machine when' employed as a,fodder-cut'ter, andthe reversal of the cylinder of kuives'disconnects the gearing to the hnskingmechanism, so lthatthat stands stillwhile the fodder-cutter is being ma'de nse'of. In the accompanying sheet of drawings-- i Figure 1 is a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the linee: 2:', iig. 2.
Figure 2, a planV or top view -of thesaxne.` 'Y Figure 3, a front view of a portionlof the same.
Figure 4, a side sectional view of a portion of the saine, taken in the `line a; er, iig. 2. Figure 5, a transverse section of a portion ofthe same, Vtaken in the line y iig. I. Similar letters of reference indicate likeparts. l '4 A represents the frame of the machine, v'onstructed similar to that of anordinery fodder-cutter, and having o. roller, B, at one end of it, and, directly below said roller, a cylindcr,`C, with a'series of spiral knives, a, 'upon it, the edges of `which work in contact with the` roller'. The axisof 'the knife-cylinder has a fly-wheel, D, on one end'of it, and a crank, E, onitsopposit'e end. On the frame A. there is placed a feed-box,`F, of usual eonstruction. The bottom of the feed-box is'provided with -a slide, G, the use of'. which-Twill be presently shown. Underneath the feed-box F there are placed vtwo inclined rollers, H H, whieh'are parallel with each other, and 'are connected by gears at their upper ends', one of the rollers having its shaft or upper journal extended and t "connected by bevel-gears axto a'shaft, HX, which receives its motion fromthe shaft of theknife-cylinder through the medium of gears I. The rollers H H are covered hy a cap, J, which extends nearly their whole length, space being allowed between vthe cap andthe rollers H H to receive theearsof corn. To the under sidel of the capone or more springs, K, are attachcd, and alsoteeth or pins 6. Il is 'a spout,'wheh leads'from the feed-hex into the upper end ofthe space-'betweene cap and rollers H H. i i
The cperationis as follows: When the device is used as a. fodder-cutter, the slide G is closedand the fodder `placed; in the feed-box F, and .is cutbetween the roller B and theknifc-cylinder C. e To couvert the device into e. corn-husliing machine, the knife-cylinder is reversed, so that thebaeks of .the bevel of the knives, will act against the roller B, as shown in iig. 4, und, therefore, not cut but' pinch or bite the cornstalks and leaves, and draw them through underneath vthe roller, but repel theears ofcorn, so that the latter willfall through :the opening in the bottom ofthe'feed-b'zr', (theslide G being drawn haok,) and the spout L conveysthe earsinto 4the upper, end of the space between the cap .l'andthe rollers'H H, the spring or springsK'keeping the ears down upon the rollers, and the latter stripping the husks from the ears', and' the pins or .teeth b senving to slit the husks, The rollers H Hdraw the. .husks between them-,andthe earsaredischarged at the lower ends f .tl-1e' rollers. In shifting or reversing *thel knife-cylinder C, `the'wheel or gear I, upon its shaft or axis, is also shifted, so that it may work intothe' gear I onshaft HX. Y I i V -I do not claim separately the roller B and knifecylinde'r'C, for they comprise an oldiand well-known device for cutting fodder neither do I claim. separately, the basking-rollers H H; but i V vI do claim 4as new, yand desire to secure by Letters Patentv 1. The cylinder of knives C, mountedso as to be reversible, in combination with the roller B, sliding-board G, gearing I, andhu'sking-rollersH H, as set forth, so thatthe husking-mechansm is disconnected. b'yreversingl e the cylinder C, and the hopper covered bythe board G when the machine is usedas a fodder-cutter, as specified. i
2; The springs K, applied to the cap J, ih combination with the inclined husking-rollere H and pins 6 t0 facilitate the separation of the husks from the ear, as set forth.
