Be it known that we, LEONARD E. SoHoon and EDWARD J. SCHAFER, citizens of the United States, and residents ofV Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Combination Mufiier and Chest-Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, 'and exact description.

The invention relates to garments; and its object is to provide a new and improved combination muffler and chest-protector which is simple and durable in construction, very neat and attractive,easily applied or removed, and arranged to afford considerable warmth and special protection to the neck, throat, and chest of the wearer from the inclemency of the weather.

The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafterrand then pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the Vaccompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a ,front perspective view of the improvement as applied and arranged for the use of males. Fig. 2 is an enlarged rear perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the collar portion of the garment, parts being broken Fig. 4 isa front perspective View of the improvement as applied and arranged for the use of females, and Fig. 5 is a rear perspective view of the same.

The improved garment is preferably made of wool or like material and produced by machine or hand-knitting with or without ribs, and the garment is provided with a tu rn-down collar A, having a neckband A and an integral turn-down portion A2, and from the lower edge the neckband A and throughout the entire length thereof extends a depending body portion B, having its front ends terminating in oblique extensions or aprons C C overlapping one the other across the chest of the wearer, as `plainly shown in Figs. 1 and 4. In the `garment to be Worn by females the aprons are somewhat longer than in the garment for males, and the lengthened aprons are' passed under the arms of the female wearer to the backto connect by buttons or other fastening devices D with the lower corners of the back B', which forms an extension of the body portion B, as plainly illustrated in Fig. 5.

One end of the neclzband A' of the collar A is connected to the corresponding end of the turn-down portion A2 by one or more stud fasteners E, (see Figs. 2 and 3,) and the other ends of the said neckband turn-down portion of collar A are similarly fastened together by socket fasteners E', adapted to engage with the stud fasteners E to fasten the overlapping ends of the collar together, as plainly shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4. Thus the fasteners E and E serve the double purpose of fastening the ends of the neckband and turndown portions of the collar together and to fasten the overlapping ends of the collar ltogether when the device is Worn. The garment when open at the collar is readily placed in position ou the Wearers body and is then closed at the neck by'fasteniug the collar ends together by the fastening devices,consist ing of the stud and socket fasteners E E', so that the oblique aprons overlap naturally over the chest of the wearer and are retained in this position.

Now from the foregoing it will be seen that the garment can be readily applied to the body of the wearer or removed therefrom when it is not desired to wear the same, and

vwhen the garment is applied it forms an eX- ceedingly good protectorfor the neck and throat of the wearer, as well as for the chest of the same.

The garment can be very cheaply manufactured, and on account of being knitted it is suiciently elastic to readily con form to the body, so as'to give the desired warmth to the protected portions.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A combination muffler and chest-protector, comprising a collar, and a depending portion extending from the lower edge of the collar-neckband, throughout the length IOC thereof to overhang the back and shoulders of the wearer, the front ends of the depending portion being prolonged to form oblique extensions or aprons overlapping'one another, as set forth.

2. A combination muiiier and chest-protector, comprising a turn-down collar, a depending portion extending from the lower edge of the collar-neckband, throughout the length thereof, and front ends of the depending portion terminating in oblique extensions or aprons overlapping one the other, and fastening devices for connecting the neckband and turn-down portions of each end of the collar together, and for connecting the overlapping collar ends with each other, to close the collar, as set forth.

3. A combination mufiier and chest-protector, comprising a turn-down collar, a depending portion extending from the lower edge of the collar-neckband, throughout the length thereof, the front ends of the depending portion terminating in oblique extensions or aprons overlapping one the other, and means for connecting the terminals of the oblique aprons with the extension back of the said body, as set forth.

4. A combination muffier and chest-protector, comprising a collar folded down wardly and outwardly upon itself to form a double thickness of the fabric, a depending portion extending from the lower edge of the collarneckband throughout the entirelength thereof, to form protectors for both the chest and the back of the wearer, the front ends of the depending portions being extended to project downwardly and forwardly from their respective ends of the collar to lap each other on the bosom of the wearer, and means for connecting the collar ends with each other, as set forth.
