JOSEPH ALFRED MARSH, oF NEwYoRK, N. yY.
| RTABLE DISPLAY-STAN n.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,741, dated December 22, I1993.
v Application filed March 3l, 1903. Serial No. 150,353- (No model.) 4 l To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, JOSEPH ALFRED MARSH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the countyand State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Port-able Display-Stand, of which the following is a f ull, clear, vand exact description. y
The object kof the invention is to provide a new and improved vportable display-stand more especially designed for displaying newspapers, periodicals, and like articles in a very attractive manner and to allow of conveniently storingthe articles in the stand and locking the latter up when notin use.
The inventiongconsists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as
' will be more fully described hereinafter-and then pointed outin the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure lis a perspective view of the improvement in an open position. Fig. 2 isa like view of the same in a closed position.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section of lthefsame in` an openposition. Fig. 4 isa like view of the same in a closed position, and Fig. 5 is alongitudinal sectional elevation of one endl of the improvement.
The improved portable display-stand is in the form of a box A, mounted at'its bottom A' on suitable casters B to allow of couveniently moving the stand about, and the box A is provided with a cover C, connected by hingesD to the back A2 of the box, at the upper end thereof, and the Said cover O is adapted to be held in an open approximately vertical position by braces E, preferably made in sections connected with each other by knuckle-joints, Yone end of each brace being pivoted on the inner face of the corresponding end A3 of the box and the other on the under side of the cover C a distance from the end thereof. v
A distancebelow the open top of the box A is arranged a horizontal partition F for forming a top display-compartment, the front of which is formed by the portion A4of the front A5 of the box, the said portion A4 being connected at its lower end by hinges G,to .the front of the box, and the said portion A4 is adapted to swing downwardly and outwardly into a horizontal position to forma shelf,- held in the said horizontal position by slotted braces H, pivoted on the ends of the front portion A4 and engaging pins H on the inner faces of the sides AS of the box. The front portion or shelf A4when swung into a' horizontal position, as shown inFigs. l and', is iiush with the partition F. Whenthej cover C and the front portion of the shelf A4 are closed, as shown in Figs. 2 andA ,they are f adapted to be locked together by asuitable keyfcontrolled locking device I.n Y ,Y
The portion of thebox Avbelow thel partition F forms va storagefcompartment, access to which is had by a door A6; formingfpart of the front A5 and lconnected theretojat its lower end by hinges J. vThe door Awhen swung downward and outward into an approximately horizontal position forms a shelf for supporting newspapers and the like, and the shelfis held in this position byslottedy braces K, similar to the braces Hand pivoted on the ends of the box and engaging pins K on the sides A8 of the box.l A key-.controlled locking device L serves 'to lock the door A6 in a closed position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4'. On the inner faces of the ends land back of the top display-compartment of the bfox are arranged racks N and N', and tiers of racks 0 are arranged on the under side of the-cover G, and tiers of racks P are arranged on the outer faces of the ends A3. Now when the display-stand is in an open 'posi-tion, the several racks mentioned are adapted to support a large number of newspapers, periodicals, books, and like articles in an approximately vertical position, and a large number of said articles are placed onthe partition 4F of the upper displaycompartment iand on the shelves A4 and Ai", of which the shelf A6, owing to its width, 1s especially serviceable for support-ing and displaying newspapers. A The V racks N are preferably formed by transverse rods, supported at their rear ends in the back A2 and at their front ends in brackets'N2, at-
IOO
tached to the ends A3 of the box, and the rack N is likewise formed of a rod attached tothe ends A3 of the box.
The racks O are preferably formed with shallow bottom trays O and rods O2, located a distance above the trays O and secured with the latter at their endson brackets O3, secured to the under side ofthe cover C. The racks P on the outer faces of the ends A3 of the box are similar in construction to the racks O, so that further description of the same is not deemed necessary. Each of the trays O of the racks O and P is preferably provided in the bottom with a drain-aperture, as indicated in the drawings.
The racks O are so arranged that when the cover C is swung downward into a closed position then the said racks extend in the upper portion of the top display-compartment, as indicated in Fig. 4, and hence it is not necessary to remove the contents of the said racks when swinging the cover down into a closed posit-ion.
The storage-compartment in the lower portion of the box A is used for containing the stock of the dealer, and the said compartment is also adapted to receive articles displayed when the dealer closes up the device at the end of a days work.
On the under side of the cover C, near the free ends thereof, are secured keepers Q for receiving the angular arms R' of awning-supporting bars R, adapted to carry an awning S, extending forwardly a distance above the box to shelter the contents displayed therein from the rays of the sun and the inclemency of the weather.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the display-stand is very simple and durable in construction, can be readily opened up, and the shelves extended for properly displaying a large number of newspapers, periodicals, books, and other like articles to the greatest advantage and always within convenient reach of the dealer in charge of the stand.
By having the display-stand mounted on casters it can be readily rolled about from 'one place to another.
When the stand is closed and the cover C and shelves A4 and A6 are locked, then the contents contained in the stand are safe against pilfering by unauthorized persons.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A display-stand provided with a box having a top display-compartment, a hinged cover for the top of the box, a hinged shelf forming a portion of the front of the box and adapted to extend outwardly, flush with the bottom of the top display-compartment, display-racks on the underside of the said cover, and display-racks ou the inside of the ends and back of the display-compartment, as set forth.
2. A display-stand provided with a box having a top display-compartment, a hinged cover for the top of the box, a hinged shelf forming a portion of the front of the box and adapted to extend outwardly, rflush with the bottom of the top display-compartment, a locking device for locking the said cover to the said shelf, to close the top display-compartment, and display-racks on the under side of said top lid having rack-bars postioned to hold displayed articles in an approximately horizontal position when the lid is shut down, whereby said articles remain in position in said racks when the stand is closed for the night, as set forth.

A displaystand-provided with a box having a top display-compartment, a hinged cover for the top of the box, a hinged shelf forming a portion of the front of the box and adapted to extend outwardly, Hush with the bottom of the top display-compartment,astorage-compartment in the lower portion of the box, a hinged door for the said compartment, forming a part of the front of the box, the said door being adapted to form a shelf, and means, substantially as described, for holding the said cover and the said shelves in extended positions, as yset forth.
5. A display-stand comprising a box having a top display-compartment,ahinged cover for the top of the box, a hinged shelf forming a portion of the front of the box and adapted to form the front of the said display-compartment, the said shelf being adapted to extend outwardly, flush with the bottom of the said top display-compartment, a storage-com partment in the lower portion of the box, a hinged door for the said compartment, forming a portion of the boxfront, the door being adapted to form a shelf, braces for holding the said cover and the said shelves iu extended positions, racks on the inside of the ends and back of the said display-compartment, racks on the under side of the said cover, and racks arranged in tiers on the outside of the said box ends, as set forth.
