IMPROVEMENT IN CAPS FOR OIL-(JANS.
dlp .tlpmle rn'nnh in in ilgrse tnten.' zitnit mit mating part nf tige anni.
Be it known that I, JOSIAII I-I. News, of Centre Abington, in the county of Plymouth, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Caps for Oil-Cans and other vessels; and I do hereby declare that the following is o full, clenr, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l represents aside elevation of an ordinary can, with my improvement applied.
Figure 2, a. sectional elevationthrough the line :i: su, fig. 4. I
Figure 3, a plan or top view when closed.
Figure 4, a similar view when open.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a convenient device for opening and closing the necks or mouths of oil-cans und other vessels.
Myinvention consists in the combination of a revolving cap or cover with the neck andl mouth of the can or vessel, the construction of my improvement being such that, when the cap is revolved in one direction, the
can or vessel will be opened, and when the cup is turned in the contrary direction, the can or vessel will be closed.
A, in the drawings, represents a. can of' theordinary construction.- 'lhe neck B is covered on its top byu. diaphragm, a, in which is cut an opening, f, through which to ll in the liquid.` y
On the sides of the neck a screw-thread is formed, upon which fits the cap, C, which has also a thread formed on its interior sides, corresponding with those of the neck of the can.
`The cap, C, has also on its upper surface an opening, c, nearly corresponding with the openingf ot' the can.
Within the upper part ofthe cap, C, is placed n cork, rubber, or other packing, E, which is firmly secured in the cap, C, and said packing has an opening, correspondingr to vthe. openings c f.
The bottom part or flange D of the cap, C, is slotted or partly cut away at cl, to allow a small pin, g,
,attached to the can A, at 'or near its neck, to play therein, und which `has n twofold purpose: first, to prevent the cap from .being turned too far either wny, in opening and closing the can; second, to p from falling oil` while opening the can for filling in the liquids. l i
' In opening' the can or vessel for filling in thc liquids or-otlrer contents, it is necessary to turn the top, C, in the direction indicated by the arrow, 3,) by which movement the opening, c, of the cap will come into line with that of the opening, f, of the diaphragm a, as shown in fig. 4. To close the can, the movement of the cap is simply reversed,.the screw-threads' servingdo depress thc cap, and compress the packing upon the opening, f, and thus seal the some7 so that allleakage of gas'or contents is avoided.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Iretters Patentv 1'. The construction of the revolving perforated cap,V in combination with the neck of the con or other vessel, substantially as herein shown and described. i
revcnt the cap, C,
2. Iialso claim the combination of the senling-packingE with the cup and the diaphragm a, substantially n as herein shown and described.
3. I also claim the slotted flange l), in combination with the stop-pin g, as and for the purpose set forth.
JOSIAI-I H. NOYES.
