SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,313, dated August 23,1904.

To all whom it may concern.-

My invention relates to corner-protectors I such as are commonly employed for protecting corners of books and similar objects; and it consists in the combination, with a metallic shield or shield composed of a hard and substantially non-porous material, of a piece of porous material secured thereto and-provided with an adhesive substance capable of being a dissolved in water.

The object of my invention is to provide a corner-protector with means wherebyit may be readily attached to the object which it is intended to protect.

I will now proceed to describe a protector embodying my inventionand will then point In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a portion of a book-cover having a protector embodying my invention applied to the corner thereof. In the embodiment of -my invention herein illustrated the protector comprises a shield formed of a plate 6, two flanges 7 7 and portions 8, connecting the flanges 7 7 with the plate 6. This shield is usually and preferably made of metal or may be made of any suitable hard and non-yielding material.

Suitable material for this purpose is invariably substantially nonrporous. For the latter reason it is almost impossible to successfully employ an adhesive material therewith, because of the difiiculty of making same stick to the shield. I therefore supply a piece of porous material 9such as bristol-board, fab ric, or the likewhich I secure to the plate 6 of the shield in such a manner as to leave one side thereof exposed. To this side I apply an adhesive material which I allow to dry. The article is then ready for use at any time by merely moistening the adhesive material and applying it in the ordinary manner.

In the embodiment of my invention shown in, Figs. 1, 2, and 3 I secure the piece of porous material to the plate 6 of the shield by recessing or offsetting a portion of the 1 plate 6, as at 10, and fitting the porous material thereto.

to assist in securing the piece of material in place. In Figs. 4 and 5.1 have shown a modified form of my device in which several such tongues 11 are shown as punched out of the plate 6, but in which-there is no recessed portion. In this form the porous material, which may conveniently be a piece offabric, will be secured to the plate 6 by medium of the tongues alone. 1

A protector so formed is an article of man* ufacture complete in itself, which may be sold ready for use; When used, it will only .be necessary to wet the adhesive material and apply the article in place. The fabric. or other porous material will stick to the bookcover or similar object and, being secured against movement upon the shield, will securely hold the protector in place against accidental removal.

It will be seen that by my invention I provide a cheap and efficient protector which may be readily secured in place without the usual attaching devices and without damaging the object to which it is secured. It will also be understood that while I have shown and described my device as applied to the corner of a book it may equally be employed for the side edges, if desired, or may constitute a binding all around the edge of the book-cover. It may also be employed for protecting the edges or corners of other articles besides books, as desired.

What I claim is- 1. As an article of manufacture, a protector of the class described comprising a shield composed of hard and unyielding material, such as metal, and a lining of porous material secured thereto, the exposed surface of which carries an adhesive material.

2. As an article of manufacture, a protector of the class described comprising a metal shield and a lining of porous material secured thereto, the exposed surface of which carries an adhesive material.

3. As an article of manufacture, a protector of the class described comprising a metallic shield having an offset portion, a piece of porous material inserted in said offset portion, and adhesive material applied to the exposed face of the porous material.

4L. As an article of manufacture, a protector 0f the class described comprising a metallic shield and a piece of porous material secured thereto by a tongue struck up from the metallic shield, the outer face of the porous material carrying adhesive material.
